I'm going to Buenos Aires and Rio on business in early July. I will have 2.5 days in BA on my own (Fri-Sun), then two days of meetings, and then will fly to Rio early Wed for more meetings, flying home Thursday evening.
I feel comfortable finding my way around in BA on my own (will be staying first at the Hilton, on my own dime, and then at the Four Seasons). In Rio, I probably will have Wed evening, and either Wed afternoon or Thursday until early afternoon on my own. I'll be staying at the Copacabana Palace. I'm a seasoned solo traveller (Europe, Asia, Middle East), but I am somewhat apprehensive about getting around in Rio on my own - e.g. transfers to and from the airport, sightseeing, going out to dinner, etc. I don't want to waste the opportunity to see a little of Rio in the limited amount of time I have, but am somewhat concerned about safety.
I would appreciate suggestions for the following: (a) in BA, good restaurants where I'd feel comfortable as a solo diner, plus shopping recommendations (clothes, leather); and (b) in Rio, some kind of sightseeing option that's manageable in the limited amount of time I have, plus suggestions for how to get to and from the airport. Do I just have the hotel arrange a car to pick me up and take me back? Should I look into hiring a private guide for a half day trip before my flight leaves on Thursday? Thanks
