I have been dreaming of someday getting a chance to do those overwater bungalow stays.

But I have some questions and opinions I would like to have....

1) Would you recommend Maldives or French Polynesia? Is there some other choice?

2) Hilton still does not offer room upgrades for points, is that correct?

3) What have been the per night charges people have paid for upgrading to OWB.

4) I am Gold status permanently. Based on travel I may occassionaly be Diamond, but I am not at this point in time. What are the likelihood of some level of upgrades based on status, at these resorts? What have been some experiences?

Over water bungalows are becoming more popular world-wide, so you might not have to go to those two destinations just for that, but if you want the clearest water in the world those two destinations are fantastic choices.

Haven't been to either specific Hilton property, but I have been around Polynesia and it's about as good as it gets for volcano formations surrounded by amazingly-clear water. Moorea is a beautiful location and I'd highly recommend it. You just need to take a flight from West Coast of US to Papetee (Air Tahiti Nui flies direct, or a few other airlines have connections), then catch a ferry, boat or small plane for the VERY brief ride across to Moorea).

I've looked into the details of getting to the Maldives and it's a little harder to get to from the US (no direct flights from anywhere really, so it's very secluded). My impression is that it's more similar to the islands off Australia in terms of the island type (more sand than volcano) and it looks more luxurious and exclusive. I've been told that only 150,000 people visit French Polynesia each year, and I'd guess far fewer visit the Maldives.

Right. You may need to make special arrangements to get a really good room, suite or bungalow. Diamond special services is the only way I know to ensure special treatment in such locations, but you can also e-mail the hotel manager directly ahead of time to make sure that they know you are coming and to set some expectations.

Perhaps someone else has direct experience at these properties?

Warning: in either location you'll be tied to eating in their restaurants and paying whatever prices they charge for food and drinks (simply because there's not many other options around). I can tell you that Tahiti is about the most expensive place that I've ever been (i.e., more expensive than Tokyo, Oslo, Stockholm, London, etc.), it was $5 US just for a can of Coke.

But, have a great trip if you go -- either place is about as good as it gets for luxury and relaxation. ^
