I have an AMEX Platinum card (AMEX Aeroplus Canada).

We want to rent a card in Australia. The AMEX agent told me that the card does give collision damage coverage for cars rented outside of USA and Canada. He stated that the card is valid for this feature in Australia.
I was not aware of this.

Which countries outside of USA/Canada will an AMEX Platinum or Gold card offer the collision damage waiver for car rentals?

I have a UK Amex Plat, and the car hire insurance is explicitly stated as worldwide.

...you can drive away in any car you like, with a maximum replacement
value of £50,000, from any car rental company in the world.

U.S.-issued cards exclude Australia, New Zealand, Italy... from memory.

Anyone wanting the details of coverage (including countries) is well advised to get it in writing from Amex, specific to the card carried.

For US plat, they exclude Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand.

This is not easy to find. Look at

https://yourcarrentalclaim.com/claimsearch/aebenefits.aspx

Here's another exclusion: There is no coverage for any type of pick-up truck, full sized SUV, luxury van, any exotic sports car and any type of cargo van, truck or U-haul type vehicle.

Which country or counties do they mean by 'Ireland'? The Republic of Ireland? Northern Ireland (which, of course, is part of the UK)? Both countries? For a paralegal document that is shockingly badly worded.

Anyway, none of this is of any relevance to the OP who has a Canadian-sourced card, whose T&Cs will not necessarily be the same as those of cards issued in any other country, even America. UK-issued cards have quite different t&cs to the American ones described above (worldwide does mean worldwide) but as that is of no relevance to the OP I will go no further.

I have just read the T and C of my Canadian AMEX Platinum card agreement.

It states:

.... auto rental damage and theft coverage worldwide (where allowed by law) full value ....

Has anyone used the AMEX card overseas from one's own country, in this context? Did you have to pay first, and be reiumbursed from AMEX, or did the car rental company allow you to give them the insurance information, and told you to wait while it was resolved between them and the credit card insurance company?

We rented from National in downtown Vancouver and encountered a lot of road maintenance on our trip. A speeding truck in the other direction raised chips which cracked our windscreen in the back of beyond half way to Jasper. When we returned the car at YVR, they charged $300 or so to our card. We claimed from Amex who promptly reimbursed us with the credit appearing in the same billing cycle.

As always, YMMV!

This is tricky since I think the reason many of the countries are listed as exclusions for the US card is that they are countries where it is not allowed by law to offer it -- a tribute to the oligopolistic political power of the rental companies in those countries.

If you have an American Express BUSINESS card do not rely on the information in this thread. At least if the card is issued in the U.S., they will not cover you in other countries.

I guess now my new question is whether anyone has experienced if the AMEX card from a non-US country when going to a country excluded by the US card (such as Australia), has had the card cover for such damages incurred to the card, over there?
