Hi there
Im located in NZ and soon to travel to Europe. Im wanting the best place to convert currency in NZ?? Does anyone have any ideas? Which bank has the cheapest fees? Or do I use my Travel Agent? Or is it cheaper to travel and then withdraw as needed? Would really appreciate advice from experienced FT..thanks! I really know nothing about this other than the fact that my $ will look smaller in the form of Euros!

It's better to use ATMs once you get to Europe.

If you do choose to take money out from an ATM there are a couple of things to consider - you're likely to be charged NZD$5 each time (I think all NZ banks charge about the same amount) + you will be charged a foreign exchange margin (that will appear separately on your statement). Using an ATM card is certainly convenient but worth checking with your bank what the margin they charge is (may be different for M/Card, Visa and Amex) and withdrawing large amounts at a time rather than EUR20 or EUR50 to lessen the impact of the NZD$5 fee.
If you choose to change some money in NZ then shop around the different banks websites, obviously the rate will probably be different by the time you get to the bank but should give you an idea of where is cheaper. Failing that, maybe try going to your own bank and asking for either a better rate or for them to waive the sell fee.
