I'm looking for a contact management tool that will sync wireless. I've looked at MobileMe but feel that $99 is too much to pay for a single feature. While I realize that MobileMe offers more options, I'm mainly looking for contact management software that will sync wireless. Does Google have anything on this front?

Yes - the iPhone / iPod touch will sync contacts with GMail wirelessly. You can do all of your contact management in the GMail contacts section. It sets itself up as an Exchange server connection on the iPhone.

I have been using Nuevasysnc for about 9 months to sync Google Contacts and calendar to my iphone and ipod touch and I really like it. You set up an exchange account on your iphone and it syncs over the air. Changes made in made in Google are pushed to your iphone and vice versa. It can get flaky sometimes (like this week when updating to OS 3.0 triggered a delete and resync) but they have a support forums/email support where the developers post info and respond very quickly to any issues.

Google has since launched google sync which I have not yet tried but works in a very similar fashion to nuevasysnc. I understand the calendar synching on Google sync did not support as many calendars as nuevasync but I believe this may have recently been fixed.

The key to using either of these services and being happy with them is to set them up well. You will have to make sure all of your contacts are in Google and scrubbed clean first as you will lose everything in you iphone when you start using them.

For calendars, you need to make sure the time zones settings are correct on you google calendars and account as well as turning off time zone support on the iphone and setting the default calendar.

Good luck.

you won't be disappointed if you do go with mobileme it has a lot of other great features as well. I use it for blog hosting and large file sharing

For what the OP wants, I really don't see how this is any easier to use, or to set up than the free Google-based option.

Agreed. And if you use a desktop email client (TB or Outlook), the 3 way-sync (Google Contacts/iPhone Contacts/TB or Outlook) works very nicely. You can do your contact (and calendar) management on any of these whenever you want to.
