I once entered one of the major online satellite poker tournaments to the Word Series of Poker Main Event, but, due to recent seizures of players' money by federal law enforcement, it's not clear whether this year's
ostensible WSOP winners will be able to benefit.

Rather than ask this question on a poker BBS -- they tend to be populated by very rude people -- I'll ask it here.

What are the best live satellites in Las Vegas, and when are they?

I will answer my own question.

I visited the Rio; they offer several daily tournaments that are officially WSOP events (no bracelets); some are satellites offering entries to the Main Event as prizes, some aren't.

Playing at the WSOP, even at a $200 buy-in tournament, is different from playing in a garden-variety tourney in a garden-variety cardroom in that the games are very formal and conducted strictly by the rules. Minor slip-ups such as folding out of turn, that would be ignored or tsk-tsked at an L.A. cardroom will get you penalized here.

I discovered I am dead money here, and I'm glad I didn't spend $10K to find out.

The events are open to public viewing, and there will again be a Gaming Life Expo featuring booths full of gambling tsotchkes in early July.

Scratch that, it's now called:

PokerPalooza, featuring the usual tradeshow fare with plenty of poker wares and services on display. In the past there have been novelty chip sellers, poker bobble heads, poker rooms and more.

This year there is also expected to be autograph signings, book signings and seminars conducted by multiple WSOP champions.

For those looking for a little more action at the PokerPalooza, the expo includes a mechanical bull courtesy of Stoney's, the Richard Petty Driving Experience, sumo-wresting suits and several carnival-style games.

On July 4, PokerPalooza will also include a special hot dog eating contest.

PokerPalooza is free to attend and open to anyone age 21 or older. It will be open July 2-4 from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on July 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
