Travel Technology - iPod/iPhone Software Update Day - Suck. Suck. Suck.

I know its "software update day", but don't you think Apple could have figured out a way to set up a separate server farm so that they could at least keep the iTunes part of the world working while everybody and their uncle is trying to buy the latest and greatest iPod/iPhone firmware?

You can't even log into iTunes right now, let alone try to download the new Al Yankovic video. :mad::mad::mad:

I'm guessing it will only be worse Friday when the new iPhone hardware comes out.

No, I was trying to BUY a Weird Al video for my son. Everyone else on the planet is seemingly trying to download and install firmware V3. Given that I could not even log in to my iTunes account, it looks to me like Apple doesn't have enough blades to cover the influx of customers beating down their door.

Updated my iPhone to 3.0, then went to iTunes store from my MacBook and downloaded a free app. No problems here. Maybe it was the time of day for you. I imagine that iTunes servers must have been doing heavy today.

the dev team has a stable jailbreak, as far as I know. They even announced the unlock for 2g/3g 2.2.1 and 3.0 that works with itunes 8.2 now. (the new ultrasn0w works with any of the current bootloaders and any of the current baseband versions.)

jailbreak was never a problem, they just needed new tools (pwnage, quickpwn), etc, that worked properly with 3.0 fw and itunes 8.2. Give it a day or two, and the "released" versions will be out there.

I agree, it is reasonable to ask a customer to come back after midnight (or before 8am) to spend money in a store.

It was a circus Wednesday, I cant imagine how bad it will be tomorrow.

Last night, it was only bad for me from about 4-7p Central. After 7p, everything worked OK.

No problems here whatsoever. Fast d/l and install. I did around 10:30PM Pacific last night.

Is anyone having problems with "songs" and "applications" disappearing after the upgrade?

I have lost many off my iphone... and when I try to Sync again... they are not reappearing.

No problems with that. It did lock up on me today and required a home and power button hard reboot.

3.0 TruPhone worked wonderfully yesterday. (TruPhone is a Skype-like app that allows users to make international phone calls CHEAPLY!)

Last night, I downloaded 3.0 iPhone with no problems.

But when I tried to call the BF in Turkey in this narrow window of time, TruPhone CRASHED... and not just one EVERY TIME! I launched the app successfully, but whenever I say touch "keypad," "recent," or "more," the "desktop" (whatever you call the main page of the iPhone) appeared without making ANY calls.

I shutdown the iPhone twice, each for 15 minutes and I am still having the same problem.

I emailed TruPhone, so I hope a) they respond quickly and b) it's my fault and not some sytemwide glitch.

Anyone else have this problem? If so, what did you do?

Truphone worked at 9 PM Wednesday night. Wednesday night I download 3.0 iPhone. Thursday morning TruPhone does not work.

Go to the app store and search for Truphone. There's a new free app just for 3.0 users. They are probably not upgrading through the regular process since it may not be fully compatible with 2.0.

Once the stuff is out there, some of the other sites will have some tutorials and walk-throughs if you need them, but the only real place for this info is the dev team's blog.

They did run into some last minute problems, so if you want to unlock with 3.0, etc, you still need to wait. For jailbreak only, only pwnage (mac only) is currently available. Nothing yet for the new 3gs as far as I can tell.

I jailbroke Melanie's 3g with 3.0 and redsn0w. It's updating cydia's packages now over wifi.

Here's a decent set of instructions, though the tool itself seems to be pretty idiot proof. You need the correct 3.0 firmware image to do it. There are links to them in the Files section of the forum on this site if you need them (but they aren't yet listed in the Firmware tab on the main page.)

goalie-mom bought a new i-mac last tuesday and was able to get an 8gb i-pod touch for free as retired edu. new s/w comes out on friday and while 3.0 is free for the new i-phone, apple wants $9.95 to update the ipod touch :mad:.

i'm off to the apple store today to pick up goalie-mom's free printer (rain-check as out of stock) so any thoughts of asking the folks at the apple store to do it as the new s/ware came out only 3 days after the purchase. also, anyone know if it's possible to d/l the new s/w without using the apple store? yes, i'm being cheap but i'm also p/o'd at apple as in the past, they have cut breaks to those who have purchased within the last 30 days (i.e tiger to leopard)
