I am about to book a 17 day rental from the downtown Geneva location. I plan on putting about 1500 miles on the car. Not too much time will be spent parking in cities but perhaps a little.

I want a car that will be comfortable for two people and two full size suitcases, gets good mileage, has air conditioning, can handle highway speeds, and is reasonably nice.

Mini Toyota Aygo or similar is $440.

Economy Ford Fiesta or similar is $470

Compact Toyota Auris or similar is $485.

I am thinking that the mini may be two small for the suitcases and may not be able to handle 90 mph. Research seems to indicate that the Auris will get much better mileage then the Fiesta. However my experience in the US is that I never get the car advertised anyways. So which car would you take. I am planning on going with the prepaid rate.

Given the small difference in price, I'd go for the compact.

Jeremy Clarkson did a car review on Top Gear about the Ford Fiesta and seemed to enjoy it you might find it on Youtube. Why are European Fords supposedly vastly superior to American Fords? But Noah is right I would take the compact since the price differential is so low.

The new Fiesta is getting rave reviews in all the motoring magazines over here.

The fuel economy will depend more on whether you get a petrol or a diesel version. In most of mainland Europe, diesel is now the default choice, but for some reason take up of diesels in Switzerland seems much lower than rest of Europe. No idea why. I often get a Focus diesel and 40 to 50 mpg is usual (I know that UK and US gallons are not identical, so not quite an exact comparison)

In any case - my experience is you won't get the actual car that they show in their example anyway.

Not clear whether you regularly rent in Europe. You do realise these will always be manual transmission unless you specifically request an automatic? There isn't an auto version of the Aygo.

I understand that it will be a manual. I drive a manual here so no big deal.

What are the likely possibilities of car in the economy class. What about the compact class?

Is an Aygo or whatever other mini car there is stable at 130 kph?
