I haven't followed the browser wars lately. Has Chrome caught up? Or is Firefox still the best general purpose browser?

Or is Firefox still the best general purpose browser? Tedzee Jun 16, 09, 4:10 am I like Chrome, a little bit faster than FF but I'm having problems copying and pasting text otherwise its faster and better than FF. WellingtonFF Jun 16, 09, 4:25 am I agree with this comment. DeafFlyer Jun 16, 09, 7:38 am No. Firefox is still much better. Chrome feels like an older version of Firefox to me. whitearrow Jun 16, 09, 11:05 am Without the ability to customize pretty much anything, Chrome will always be a secondary or tertiary browser for me. pred02 Jun 16, 09, 2:29 pm Without the ability to customize pretty much anything, Chrome will always be a secondary or tertiary browser for me. People with netbooks seem to be happy/happier with Chrome versus Firefox. JadedTraveler Jun 16, 09, 2:58 pm Not there yet. But it seems like it's getting close. The entire why it handles imported bookmarks (importing, sorting, etc.) is not up to Google's usual standards fr easy of usability. flymetokix Jun 16, 09, 2:58 pm Chrome generally works great for me -- it is fast. When I need customized features I switch to FF. I do have a problem using Chrome with some secure sites, and I also have problems with some live cams/video. trekkie Jun 16, 09, 3:12 pm chrome does work faster but the interface does look like less functions compared to FF, not that i use FF extra functions. Chrome does have a few interface issues. on some websites, the words will appear gibberish and in my case, the cache is never completely cleared, resulting in websites remembering my presence and popping up with all sort of information that i don't want or don't need. cordelli Jun 16, 09, 4:29 pm There are several work related sites that do not work at all with Chrome, but do work with IE or Firefox. I think that will be the main thing they need to address, the compatibility issues they still have that the others do not. I see the unsupported browser message way more frequently on Chrome. Firefox is still a dozen times more popular then Chrome is so I don't expect them to be all that worried about it. PTravel Jun 16, 09, 5:10 pm Chrome is lightning fast and, for me, loads much, much faster than Firefox. I wish there were plug-ins for it (AdBlock for one), and it has occasional problems with some sites, but I use it for almost everything. glob99 Jun 16, 09, 10:09 pm Have you tried seamonkey? Hartmann Jun 16, 09, 10:21 pm I've tried Chrome on both Windows and OS X and while it still has bugs in both versions, I like the overall look and feel. Has it replaced Firefox and Safari for my everyday browsing? No. Safari 4 on both Windows and OS X is super fast, even faster than Chrome, IMO. Safari does have some Windows bugs but it's fairly reliable. I'm interested to see where they take it and whether or not they build more developer tools into it like Apple has done with the newest release of Safari. Chrome is built on WebKit, the same engine that powers Safari, which contributes to its speed. cblaisd Jun 16, 09, 10:24 pm The review in the current edition of PC World has it testing significantly faster than FF. CApreppie Jun 17, 09, 12:23 am I downloaded Chrome recently since it went out of beta. It is noticeably faster than FF. I do not like the interface and I especially do not like the lack of add-ons. I refuse to use a browser that does not block ads. And I do not want to fiddle around with file renaming and editing. It is my number 2 browser, bumping IE6 to 3. Redleg Jun 17, 09, 9:51 am I like using chrome on my Netbook because the full screen version give it a true full screen, no tool bars. Irionically though, the Google toolbar doesn't work on Chrome. I use tool bar to keep my bookmarked sites (like this one) synched between computers gj83 Jun 17, 09, 9:58 am I use firefox. I have never tried Chrome, but hang out with people who use it regularly. Anyone use Chrome with webex? I have to use IE with webex b/c the only time firefox crashes on me is when i try to connect to webex support sessions. Meeting manager is find I think, but support center crashes FF. On my HTC Fuze I'll continue to use Opera until Fennec is tweaked a little more, but Fennec does show the potential for addons and might replace Opera for me if it can render pages better than Opera but zoom better than Skyfire. N965VJ Jun 17, 09, 10:09 am Chrome still doesn’t have the customization I want, so the increase in speed is not worth it to me. Hopefully that will change. Have you tried seamonkey? Just took a quick look; with IRC and a newsgroup client it sounds like it’s bloated with stuff from the 90s. nmenaker Jun 17, 09, 10:30 am I use chrome, but ONLY for offline email and reader reading when I travel. I prefer FF still and actually on macs use the safari 4 browser, which I think is the fastest on the mac. Chrome on the mac is pretty fast. I just don't like the fact that google is tracking EVERYTHING I do with chrome, unless of course I turn off everything, which makes regular browsing a hassle. That turns me off from Chrome. stimpy Jun 17, 09, 12:09 pm I use chrome, but ONLY for offline email and reader reading when I travel. I have offline email reading with Firefox, Gmail and Google Sites. Works great. Thanks for the updates everyone. Maybe I'll just wait a bit for Chrome. pseudoswede Jun 17, 09, 2:46 pm I just don't like the fact that google is tracking EVERYTHING I do with chrome, unless of course I turn off everything, which makes regular browsing a hassle. That turns me off from Chrome. Then SRWare Iron (http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php) should, um, turn you on? :p Adblocker for Iron (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/01/06/block-ads-in-chrome-based-srware-iron-with-a-single-file/) JSFox Jun 20, 09, 4:55 pm Big brother aspect of Google and thus any google products and all the info they track scares the beejeebers out of me. FF could use some improvements in the speed department but it's safe, secure, and does everything else well. UALOneKPlus Jun 24, 09, 5:48 pm Chrome is still not able to save groups of tabs as favorites. A huge omission imho. I don't use it because it is too big of a pain to manually save each tab as a favorite. CApreppie Jun 24, 09, 8:11 pm Chrome works light years better than Firefox on the newer Yahoo mail. The interface has never worked well with Yahoo. Chrome makes it faster and smoother. Too bad about the bad interface and lack of extensions. pseudoswede Jul 7, 09, 1:17 pm FF3.5 is teh suck. Can someone recommend Add-On's for the following functionality... * List tabs in rows instead of the stupid scrolling arrows. * Proper mouse gestures -- i.e., right-click + left-click = browser back function pierre mclopez Jul 8, 09, 12:21 am NYTimes: Chrome OS (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/08/technology/companies/08operate.html?scp=3&sq=google&st=cse) RSSrsvp Jul 8, 09, 8:16 am What's wrong with Opera? I alternate using it with Firefox depending on my mood :) and it is extremely fast. nmenaker Jul 8, 09, 8:29 am old news, new date. :-) SmilingBoy Jul 8, 09, 8:39 am FF3.5 is teh suck. I alternate using it with Firefox depending on my mood :) and it is extremely fast. There isn't anything wrong with Opera. I like it best, and use it most. However, Opera has given me some problems with some websites that earlier versions didn't have problems with. I don't know what they did, but I hope they fix it in the next update. N965VJ Jul 8, 09, 11:14 am NYTimes: Chrome OS (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/08/technology/companies/08operate.html?scp=3&sq=google&st=cse) Interesting. If I were in the market for a netbook, I would hold off until this and Win 7 comes out. bocastephen Jul 15, 09, 11:47 pm Is anyone else being driven crazy by the annoying tabs on Chrome that randomly detach themselves into new windows as you pass over or click a tab? I can't figure out how to lock them in place and it's really spoiling an otherwise positive user experience. SmilingBoy Jul 16, 09, 2:42 am This is only supposed to happen when you drag a tab away from the tab bar - and this is also how it works for me. |
