Alitalia MilleMiglia - Transit times through FCO: CO --> AZ USA to Africa...

Good Afternoon,

My brother will be traveling in July EWR<-->FCO on CO and then FCO<-->TUN on AZ. His tickets were purchased separately and are non-connecting (obviously). He will not be checking bags and he is traveling in Y.

He only has 1.5 hours between flights from CO->AZ in FCO. I had advised him that this is a bad idea but I have limited experience in FCO. My question:

#1) Is 1.5 hours enough for such a connection?

#2) What is the procedure for this connection? Will he need to "enter Italy" by exiting through passport control and then check back in and "exit Italy" on the depature level or is there a way to transfer without dealing with all of that?

#3) He will try to checkin online for the AZ flight before he leaves ths US. But in case that doesn't work is there a way for him to get a BP for the AZ flight without going through #2 above?

Thanks in advance.

TFD

If flights are on time then 1h30m is plenty. Risk on separate tickets is a delayed outbound flight, of course. You can stay in transit at FCO, but have a printed itinerary just in case.

When arriving from an international flight in FCO, you get to choose between going in the direction of transit or to the immigration and baggage claim area. From my experience in FCO, you need to show a boarding pass to the security check people when entering the transit area so if he fails to check-in online he might have a problem.

I would allow at least 3-4 hours for an unsecured connection on separate tickets.

Time for a 'sticky' "AZ at FCO FAQ" or something like that, with info about connection times, hints, lounges, warnings and such?

you will arrive from co flight in terminal c. I suppose you will get out through loading bridge in the satellite so you need to catch a skyshuttle back to main terminal c. once you're out you need to go down 1 floor and follow "transit" direction. Go trough security controls turn left and follow direction c20-33. Catch the skyshuttle back to where you were. 1 floor up in front of gate c20 and dolce e gabbana shop you can find alitalia transit desk where you can check in for your az flight to Tunis.

That's it ;)
