Budget - Wrecked Do They Pop My Credit Card?

I am aware of many insurance options etc. but my question is what do rental car companies do to your credit card when you have had a major wreck.
Do they start charging it to the hilt for damages and fees or do they wait to see how your private insurance does first?
Could you declare your credit card lost to the credit card company just after an accident to prevent rental agency from running your card up?

I rented a convertible, declined insurance, charged the rental to my AMEX and then on Day 7, was in an accident that totaled the car.
fwiw, i don't have personal auto insurance, as i don't own a car.
while the entire process was confusing (several phone calls from several different parties) and a bill from Budget requesting I pay @$30K (which i ignored) after @8 months later, AMEX notified me that the case was settled.
iirc, they paid Budget @$15K.
fwiw, no charge ever hit my credit card, not even for the for the week's rental
YMMV.
