anyone know why for the last two days the CX889 flight from YVR to HKG has been rerouted? The route's duration has increased from around 12hours to 16hours?!?! what's the cause of the reroute?

Thanks if anyone can shed some light :D

Just curious. It departed YVR 65 minutes late, and arrived in HKG 233 minutes late. What was the routing, or did it stop somewhere en-route?

from this http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CPA889/history/20090615/0958Z/CYVR/VHHH it looks like the plane went directly across the pacific ocean  which ends up taking around 16hours to get to hk. the normal route takes only around 12 hours which cut up along the coast of alaska, russia, japan.......

Yeah the along the coast route is faster. But if you guys know geography, that place is the Ring of Fire. Since that place has volcanic activity, planes will not fly over there since volcanic ash does terrible damage to the plane, engine failures etc.
VANCOUVER - Travellers on flights between Vancouver and Asia are advised to be prepared for delays or cancellations as a result of smoke and ash from a volcanic eruption in the north Pacific Ocean.
Air Canada said three round-trip flights from Vancouver to Tokyo, Shanghai and Seoul were cancelled Monday, while China Eastern and Air China also cancelled flights between Vancouver and Beijing and Shanghai on Sunday.
Cathay Pacific has altered its flight path between Vancouver and Hong southward, opting to fly over Hawaii instead of the polar route to avoid the volcanic activity at Sarychev Peak located on a remote Russian island.
The rerouting adds an extra hour and a half to the trip, which usually takes 13 hours and 50 minutes, airline spokeswoman Jennifer Pearson said.
It now takes 15 hours and 35 minutes. “At the moment we’re operating on schedule; we’re just changing the flight paths,” she said.
Air Canada said the volcanic activity has had little effect on flights between Toronto and Asia. It also hasn’t had an impact on flights to and from Hong Kong, which has allowed Air Canada to re-accommodate other customers on the Hong Kong flights.
Air Canada should have a better idea today about the situation. “We will continue to monitor it; it’s a day-by-day situation,” said Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah. “It depends on which way the winds are blowing.”

Weather delay happens all the time. I would always prefer the re-route and spend 1.5 hours longer on the plane than having an engine failure due to the ash over the remote Russian island. This reminds me of the engine failure of the Speedbird 747 over...umm...Indonesia (???) years ago.

i believe it doesn't. if you check the arrival times for cx flights to vancouver in the past 2 days, they're either slightly delayed or on time.

So far , it has not affected them yet.
But for Vancouver-Hong Kong CX 839,889 is not being affected that much, only those to Beijing,Shangihai,Tokyo are more affection with Cancellation or Delay

yup, the flight took around 15 hours and it wasn't too bad because i was in J seat 11A. F class was full and J seem like it was full too.....i didnt take a peek at Y because i was pretty tired when i got on the plane. service and everything was good, only two FA were waering masks. the only think i didn't like was how slow their dinner service was when we got on the plane :td: after the dinner i just laid flat my seat and went to bed. the food was awesome tho and i was able to sleep quite a bit :D arrive in hk at 9:30am a 2:30 hours delay:o

i was on CX838 the day of the eruption (Jun 12); we had boarded around 2 pm when the captain announced the delay; it took them 20 mins to plan / file the new flight plan, another 15 mins to add more fuel to the AC, and the new route took us 2 hrs longer (14 hrs 15 mins if i remember correctly).

it is more a breakfast than a supper by the time it comes around ... about 2 weeks ago i was on this .. and my kids grew quite tired of waiting for the food :

Did they served an extra meal ? or as usual , 2 meals ??
Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to get back to your seat? Or you just ate from that "footrest" seat? It must be a hassle to get back to your original seat, you had to lift the meal table up and the meal tray as well.

So they did not delay the boarding. It would be boring waiting inside the plane.
BTW, very cute kids :D

No extra meal. No ground delays since they've already taking a long route directly across the Pacific.
Have a nice flight
Hey , im back already and guess what.
Flight time= 12:46 Hours
We left YVR late and arrived at HKG early !!!
I asked the person at check in counter was there any delay due to the volcanic eruption?
He replied : Nope no more but the last few days was really really bad
Next question Regarding CX 838,839
Me:May i know what plane will it be ?
We'll be using Airbus A340-300
Me:Old or new cabin?
Old
Me:Why dont you guys change it to new interior.

Although it was the old config, how was the flight, service and Y load?
There was 15 games and as usual the entertaiment like the regional ones.
The flight wasnt that smooth over Japan and we got hit by several turbulence.
Service was not that good either.
I did not ate anything before the flight so i was quite hungry.
Note** The meal portion is much lesser compared to 1 month ago on all CX flights.
The rice is not that "packed" in the serving all spread out
I asked for an extra meal, just the meal no salad or fruits.
She said No ! No more chicken. But i will give you some snacks.
thats alright for me.
Next thing, it was written clearly that snacks are available throughout the flight but why the cup noodles wasnt ?
I had one cup noodle and i asked for another one.
She said "sorry we do not have enough onboard , 1 for each passengers"
I just kept quiet and continue watching TV.
As usual, Load was 100% full onboard not an empty seat even in J.
There was overbooked , the guy at our checkin couter asked us if we wanted to change the flight to the later one which was CX 889.
We said , no sorry we have already booked our hotel in hong kong.Which was 100% true.
He said , its alright :)

You know, I was told this numerous of times (other times they simply say no cup of noodles, please eat more Kit Kat and gain 20 pounds and be fatter and clog your arteries so you can have a heart attack and die during the flight... well... maybe not in so many words.) However, I was upset when I found out the flight attendants were very selective in who they restrict to have only one noodle. They have no problem serving other people more than one, and I do not want to try to guess their selection based on demographic or ethnicity.
Anyway, I will try to keep a positive picture and guess that the flight attendants simply forgot who had one and who didn't.

Well, probably she sort of "dislike" me.
Because on the first meal i asked for an extra serving and she said no more chicken but we do have pork.
So i said "ok just give me to me thanks"
