Other Hotel Programs - Any A-Club Silvers? Do you get any upgrades?

I'm not really into hotel loyalty programmes, but two rather cheap prepaid Novotel stays will soon propel me to the dizzying heights of A-Club Silver.

I know upgrades are not an official perk of Silver status, but do any of you get them in practice? I don't have to stay with Accor, and usually I don't, unless I can get a great deal or need a last-minute room in an unfamiliar location (viz. Far East). Is it worth making any more of an effort?

197 times read and not ONE response? Come on, I can't be the only A-Club Silver!

I just made Silver in Australia last month after 10 nights (an 11th has not posted), but I don't have another Accor stay until September in Hong Kong. As hard as it was to get those 10 nights posted, I'm honestly not expecting anything from this program, and have been disappointed with it so far. Their hotels have been fine, though, and the sale prices drive me back.

if you get an upgrade somewhere it definately has nothing to do with your silver tier ...

Don't expect anything at all ... even as a platinum member this programm is pretty annoying

Cheers for that! I'll stick to Eurostars when I can get them and independents when I can't, and only go back to Accor if the deal is great...

A bit OT, but I find Accor hotels in general give good value for money as long as you stay above the poor standard of Ibis (i.e. Mercure, Novotel etc). Have never had any problems with any of these and have always lived up to my expectations.

I don't see what the point is having a silver card instead of a, erh, nothing really as there are no benefits what-so-ever.

Well, yes, but they 'll usually charge you a fair bit extra for breakfast and internet, and as such you're better off staying elsewhere if you need either/both of the two.

I don't see the benefit, either, so the lack of benefit will keep me from visiting Accor properties unless the deal is too good to pass up.

My silver card has gotten me, umm, err, well, nothing at all. Then again, low level elites at most chains get squat, so it's not much of a surprise. My experience may not be overly telling, however, as 99% of my stays are at one Novotel in Manchester, which happens to be right down the street from one of my contractors.

Off-hand, why is everyone down on Ibis??? I stayed at one in Buenos Aires and one in Liverpool over the last few years, and thought they were just fine...

I find little to be wrong with the Ibis concept. What often IS wrong with Ibis is the pricing. For example, last year in AGP, the Ibis was 69 Euros and the Novotel 79- and they are at the exact same location (the Ibis has been built on the same parcel, just behind the Novotel). Not only is the Novotel worth much more than 10 Euros extra than Ibis, but, if you wanted to save money (which must surely be the point of a budget hotel like Ibis), you could stay in the more central 3-star Sercotel for just 56 including internet!

You are so right about the overpriced breakfast. I'm just trying to figure out who would pay an extra EUR 15 per person for breakfast in a city like Paris (where I mainly stay with Accor). Surely NO ONE does this (I hope) as it's the rip off of the century.

Couldn't care or less about internet so don't know what "their" pricing is.

Still I believe Accor gives you good value for money :)

Still I believe Accor gives you good value for money :)To be fair, expensive breakfast and internet is hardly an Accor-specific feature but is pretty much par for the course among hotel chains. While you do have country variations, it is in many locales often only at the bottom end of the market that you get free internet and that rates systematically include breakfast (and often a not too impressive breakfast at that).
Compared to other hotel chains, and perhaps with the exception of the Sofitel and Pullmann brands, rates for breakfast at accor hotels do not seem to me to be especially expensive and, if anything, would tend to be marginally cheaper than in comparable ICH, Hilton, Marriott, SPG properties.

You must be having a laugh? You seriously don't think EUR 15 is expensive for breakfast? A croissant and a coffee set's me back approx EUR 4-5 so why on earth would I pay EUR 15 for the same at the hotel? Even in Dublin (on the top 5 list of most expensive cities in Europe) you can get a 2 course dinner for less than that

I'm not being cheap and can afford it by all means, but when something is not showing its value for money I just can't justify to fork out for things that are clearly a rip off. My own money or the company's money, doesn’t make any difference...

I'm not comparing with other hotels as it is irrelevant in this case...

Well, this is what I got for my silver status:
2 complimentary drinks (naturally - I chose cocktails...) and a small welcoming gift (which I cannot remember what it was).
It also got me 50% more points for each $ spent at the hotel.
As for a room upgrade - not by the silver status (I think gold status gets it), but my room was upgraded due to the AdvantagePlus card.
Hope it helps. :)

I am A'Club Gold but I never received any upgrade, no welcome gifts, no drinks coupons, nothing at all, except the bonus on points.
In my opinion this is the worst program on the market so, even if my Gold status will expire on march next year, I will switch my loyalty to Hilton HHonors that is more consistent with medium elite levels (free breakfast, upgrade to executive floors).

ALL Eurostars hotels offer free internet, and most of them offer competitive rates inclusive of breakfast, and these are key reasons why they've become my preferred chain. However, they're clearly nowhere near as big as Accor.

I'm fortunate to have a comp A-Club Gold, but all I get is a points bonus. It's a pity that my base point score, supposedly based on € spend but not actually giving me that many points per £.
No upgrades, no anything at all in three stays - just a lousy room, lousy service and lousy breakfast I had to pay for. £5.50 and it's not worth that much. Serves me right for staying at the Wembley Ibis.

Any idea how can I too become fortunate to have a comp Gold/Silver?
