Does anyone know how strict this rule is?
I am able to get as far as entering my credit card details for an award booking that is less than T-24 to departure. If I was to enter my credit card details, would the booking be accepted?

Try it. It's not like they will take your money/points and then tell you that you can't fly... ;)

I have in the past found it not possible to book within 24 hours. As suggested, why not just try n see if it issues a ticket

I would! But at this stage I am looking at international flights with no firm travel plans confirmed ;)

I would not plan around being able to circumvent the 24 hour rule ; if it doesn't work , could lead to expensive tickets being required

Aren't the award buckets used for allocating upgrades within the 24 hour mark? That is probably one reason they aren't offered.
Also, someone wanting to travel < 24 hours notice is probably in such a hurry that they wouldn't be as price sensitive. So Qantas may think that they are cash cows.

And security will probably give you a good going over

Oh, I'm too much of a planner to leave it to the last minute. I was just wondering if anyone has completed such an award booking.

I have ticketed an award booking under the current rules < 16 hours before the first flight. It was in the evening for a flight the next morning.
