I am looking for the cheapest possiblity to rent a car in Sardinia in mid July for approx. 1 week. Which "site" or "chain" can you recommend?

I can recommend autoeurope.com they often have great fares.

This really isn't answering your question, but Sardinia has a pretty fair network of train and bus service. If you do look at this option though, watch out for Sundays when service is quite a bit less frequent.
