Ok so i have a decision to make. Im flying out most probably July 29th from BLR to LAX. I flew CX/KA on this same route last year and overall had a pretty good expierence, though the FA's on CX left something to be desired and i got an old plane on the return leg. KA was thoroughly enjoyable. CX this time is turning out to be a few 1000 RS cheaper than EK, but there is the matter of waiting in HKG which honestly i wouldnt mind because it would give a chance to go to the city and explore. EK would be 16 hours nonstop to LAX, which even though with the great food and IFE, i dunno if i could endure that. help!! :)

If the EK flight is on a 777, that alone would cause me to choose CX. The EK 777s have 10-across seating, which is just too claustrophobic for me.

You won't get an old plane on the HKG-LAX route any more - they all have the new "shell" Y seat and the big AVOD.

yep EK is on the 777-200 LR. I had the shell seat last time on CX and it was fine :D

I had the shell-seat for my HKG-YVR (777-300ER) that day too ,it was horrible.
I did not get any sleep on the 12 hour flight !!!
But the entertaiment was great.
My return flight will be on an A340-300 which has the old seats.Maybe this time i can get some sleep on the 14 hour flight

Sounds like you have an easy decision. You didn't mention service at all, only price and wanting to look around Hong Kong, so based on those items stick with CX.
(Based on service, you'd probably still want to stick with CX as it is more likely to be highly variable on EK--though perhaps a greater chance of an out-of-the-blue op-up on EK, and you might not accrue miles on CX depending on fare class)

Not to flame but you still have possibility to get new seat. CX has 340 upgraded to new seats already
I never flew new seat on anything longer than 5 hour so no comment.

Yup , there is a slight chance of getting them.
I may even get the 777-300ER as they said Aircraft Varies On Date(EQV)
on their website :D

well actually i was concerned about service as well..and on that note i was disapointed with CX. FA's did not smile at all, one seemed to "roll her eyes at me" when i told her she brought me the wrong landing card, etc. KA was miles ahead. I wud be accruing miles with CX based on the fare class CX giving me through net booking.

Does a smile or one that seemed to roll her eyes really put a huge damp on your trip? It seems like you have really high expectations in Y class.
I don't really care about the body language of flight attendants, but as long as they fulfill my requests respectfully, I have no problems. It does seem interesting that KA does have better service and products than CX, maybe because the FAs are more relaxed in terms of their schedules? I would still prefer CX over KA since I like their entertainment AVODs.

well ive been spoiled by Malaysian Airlines for the past few years in Y (amazing service, but horrible schedules) so yeah i do have somewhat of high expectations. When someone rolls his/her eyes at you at a simple request (and that too the FA brought the wrong card the first time knowing i was a US citizen), then its something to be looked at. Singapore as well was nothing but good to me :). Thought CX would continue the trend but sadly that wasnt the case...service was sorta rushed, FA's werent that great, etc, etc, they seemed to disappear for most of the flight. KA was a treat though, so i dunno

I don't know about KA FAs necessarily being more relaxed in flight than CX FAs because more of KA flights are short haul ones than CX, though the runs between TPE and HKG for CX are tight for inflight service too.

I concur - MH inflight service is quite good. Their operational scheduling consistency though could be better - I flew a PEN-SIN segment that had to make a stop in KUL due to some other flight being cancelled or delayed. Fortunately for me I still had plenty of time to connect to an onward MNL flight, but there were several travelers really nervous about making their onward flight to SFO (probably SQ2) due to the unscheduled stop (they managed to make it on the flight barely)>
