Two v.good friends were booked AKL-LAX on the 744 flight Monday night just gone...in Y.

I "signed them up" as my Gold nominees and requested Y+ upgrades for both... I can't say I held out much hope as I had been told that they would only get "my" priority if I was flying with them (and I don't join them until next Thursday!).. and of course for TWO...

Still... they both cleared... and thoroughly enjoyed the experience...

Was that just sheer blind luck, or have others had a good expereince with nominees?

Gifted upgrades do get the benefit of your status.

Still... made it a nice surprise to hear it had gone through! - especially for both...

Now I just need MINE to clear....:D:D:D (Hope I get some sort of Karmic credit for sponsoring the ladies!!)

I have had great success with this. A work colleague, who is gold elite, gifted me 2 complimentary upgrades last year for my trip to London. I was booked on Premium Economy and ended up getting upgraded to Business Premier for 3 of the 4 sectors. They basically upgraded me at the gate (or in the Koru) before each flight. It was a real bonus.

I'm not sure how this happened, guess I got lucky. I was only expecting upgrades for 2 out of 4 sectors and used one on the way to LHR on the AKL-HKG leg. The return was on NZ1 via LA and when I checked in I asked about the upgrade knowing I only had one left, I ideally wanted the LAX-AKL sector as the upgrade but didn’t want to pass up the opportunity on the LHR-LAX leg and then miss out on the leg to AKL as it was a standby upgrade, I ended up getting upgraded at the gate at LHR for the leg to LAX, all good I thought, take it while you can. When in the Koru at LAX (that’s a mission in transit) I asked about the upgrade associated with this flight and got a BP boarding pass ^. Not sure why, surely they don’t consider NZ1 a single flight/sector with a stopover. The flight was extremely full so maybe they left me up the front while the loaded up the back.

Right they treat LHR-AKL as 2 sectors for purposes of u/gs. You got an op-up - congrats.
