Will be flying LAX-AKL return and also AKL-SYD all in Business class with my 10 year old son this summer. I saw mention of a kid's meal on the NZ web site. Is anyone familiar with the quality of the meals? Additionally, would I need to call ahead of time to request one of these meals for my flights? Thanks!

Yes you need to call ahead and get it pre-booked.

I had childrens meals ordered at Christmas this year going MEL-AKL-SFO // LAX-AKL-MEL, all in business.

They tell me that there are no childrens meals on the trans tasman routes, they just have to pick from the main menu, yet on a recent A320 flight from WLG-MEL, a childrens meal turned up without me asking for one. It looked nice as well, compared to what we had recently seen.

For the main long haul flights, the meals were not very nice. They had boiled 3-veg on the side (diced carots, potatoe and peas). The main course was lasange, and I had a taste of it - yuck.

Overall my wife and I found the kids meals on Air NZ very poor, and in the future will fill up the kids at the airport or the lounge before we fly on Air NZ business class again.

Go ahead and book it, but make sure you have other snacks with you as well in case they don't like the food. Maybe check out what is in economy class, which is one thing we didn't do.

They are nothing like the Singapore Airlines "Yummy" offerings.

NZ seems to be one of the few airlines that has kids business class meals on long haul though.

From our experiences, AC, TG, LH, SQ, OS, LX long haul don't load kids meals for business, unless the Yummy! menu is ordered from on SQ (a CHML is just ignored). Though, admittedly, TG flight attendants have on the odd occasion (probably2 or 3 out of 20-25 flights) taken the selected adult meal and put it on a plate and cut it up into 5/6 year old sized bites.

Our last 2 NZ long hauls have resulted in the same - boiled 3 veges with cardboard lasagne - CHML - though we've never received a CHML on trans-Tasman NZ J or Y.

We do load up on snacks at the airport though, to take on the plane. LH and TG particularly serve food that's too gourmet even for me, let alone Master 6.

After reading some on of the NZ Menu's i would hope my J Class flight was serving Breakie!
