HK closes kindergartens and primary schools
Gov't just announced they are closing all kindergartens and primary schools for 2 weeks.

Hong Kong is set to order all primary and lower-level schools to close for two weeks after confirming that a cluster of influenza cases at St Paul's Convent School involves the swine flu virus.

The order, to be effective from tomorrow,is expected to be announced by Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen shortly.

The move to shut all primary schools, kindergartens and nurseries came after Centre for Health Protection confirmed that the St Paul cluster of cases are swine flu infections and raise the number of cases to 12 from nine previously.

Are they expecting both the parents and children to self quarantine at home during these two weeks?

The parents too because they would have close contact with the children.

This is what you get when you spend many years training administrators, and then someone appoints them as leaders.

They don't want to be finger pointed if there's an outbreak in primary schools and kindergarten in massive scale. in theory (and only in theory) it should delay the outbreak and relive some load at the hospital (which I agree)

:rolleyes:I laughed when I see this ...

Then the school closure will be effective only if both the parents and children will self quarantine themselves at home for the next 14 days.

At least whilst at school, teachers can better supervise the children ensuring and teaching them to practice good personal hygiene.

If the parents and children are treating the closure as extra 14 days' holiday and go about in the society such as dim sum, movies, Disneyland, Ocean Park and riding the public transportation system, it may accelerate the spread such as the case in NY after they initially closed some schools. School children did not stay home!

Disneyland HKG launched a special promo for kids in Kindergarten and primary during the next 2 weeks.

HKG administration is "not amused"

Disneyland was rather quiet for a Sunday yesterday. Infact, the least busiest I have expereinced.

Total overreaction by the HK Government, IMO. It would have been totally rational and defensible to close just the affected school (s); St Paul Convent School, IIRC, has both a primary and secondary section. Then the authorities can isolate that.

As others have pointed out, closing down ALL schools in the territory makes no sense, as the families are likely to treat it as an extra holiday period...going to restaurants, movies, and recreational and entertainment spots like Ocean Park and Disneyland, which defeats the whole purpose of trying to isolate any carriers.

OK, so all primary and secondary schools - unless the government in its wisdom has rescinded their order...perhaps you can update us on that? Anyway my point is that the government has overreacted = using a meat cleaver instead of a scapel, metaphorically speaking.

closures: just the kindies and the Primary ones. A few secondary ones 'cos of mass outbreak. 5 more schools yesterday I think.

But all getting very jaded with all this.
