View Full Version : Downgrading from Gold to Green?

My annual fee for my gold card finally showed up ($150) after my first free year. When I call to cancel the card, is it possible to have them just close that account and slide it into a new Green card without requiring a credit pull? If so, would it then be possible to receive the same benefits of getting your first Green card, i.e., 10,000 MR points and first year free. Probably too much to ask for but I thought I'd at least give it a shot. If not, then I guess it would be simpler to just cancel the Gold and then just start fresh with a new app for the Green to get those bonuses. (I still have a current biz Gold for continued access to my MR points while I would be doing this.)
Thanks for any advice.

You can downgrade to Green without any credit pull. More likely your card # will remain the same, only benefits will change.

So if I can do this without any credit pull, would I still be eligible for the first-year-free offer and bonus points for first use with the new Green card? If not, then I just have to decide if a card cancel and then another credit pull is worth those bonuses. I'm thinking it would be, unless someone can convince me otherwise...

Highly doubtful that you'll get anything other than a green card if you downgrade. The only leverage you have would be some kind of retention bonus to keep the gold card. Call and ask.

I have a downgrade question. My wife received a 100K bonus to get the Platinum card. We do not want to pay the annual fee to keep the card, but we don't want to lose the MR points. What is the best way to keep the points and have a low card fee?

Have them change it over to a Green card ($95) when the annual fee comes if you want to maintain the ability to transfer to other airline/hotel programs, or you can (maybe?) switch it over to a Blue card, which has no annual fee, but doesn't let you transfer points.

I guess if you care so much about the $150 annual fee, maybe you are having the wrong card

Went ahead and cancelled the Gold card (no attempt whatsoever at retaining me. How humiliating) and then just applied for the Green so now I've got another year free and 10,000 more points plus another year before I'll need to transfer the points somewhere. Well worth a credit pull IMHO. (But when the fee comes due next year I'll probably just cancel this one too and then pick up the Green biz. So I've got at least a couple more years of fee-free access to my MR points.)
