My mother and I are traveling throughout Europe and will each have approx 45lb bags. I know Ryan air allows 33lbs (15kgs) for each passenger. Has anyone flown them with bags around 45-50lbs and what did you end up paying for your total baggage fee?

Thanks!:)

They will weigh your bags for sure. Not a question there. No one single bag can be heaver than 23kgs. Your maximum allowance is 15kgs for the regular baggage fee of 10 euros if you pay in advance, or 20 euros if you pay at the airport. For each kilo extra, the cost is 15 euros. So, if you have 50lbs, this is approx 23kgs, therefore you would pay 120 euros extra for those 8 kgs.

Welcome to Flyertalk, JBroy2380.

I suggest you read up on Ryanair's rules very carefully before you decide whether or not you're going to book flights with them... and that's not just rules about checked baggage.

For starters, you have to check in online and you have to print your own boarding pass - if you turn up at the airport without a boarding pass you pay a boarding card re-issue fee which in many cases is higher than the fare you paid.

As already mentioned, if your checked baggage is above 15 kg each (and you're not allowed to pool it) you pay a HUGE surcharge.

You are allowed to carry on 10 kg per person free of charge, and it's strictly one item. Someone I know got told to put his water bottle inside his carry-on "or else".

Depending on the distances you are planning to cover you may well be better off travelling by train...

Thank you all so much! It looks like it certainly is better to fly a "more expensive" airline that does not nickel and dime you. Even checking in costs money!!!

All the best!

Wise decision! :)

Just a few words about European airlines in general...:

Most "legacy" airlines let you check baggage free of charge - some have a "one item" limit, some don't. The weight limit is usually 20 kg - sometimes 23, sometimes 15. There is also a health-and-safety limit of 23 kg per item.

The vast majority of airlines have a weight limit for carry-on baggage (I only know of one that doesn't, Easyjet). The limit can be as low as 5 kg, though somewhere between 8 and 10 is more usual. On intra-European itineraries the limit is one item (rather than "one item and one personal item"), but small additional items are allowed - a lady's purse/handbag is fine, as is a camera, as is a small shopping bag containing your in-flight reading material or airside shopping.
