Hertz - Hertz changes rates unilateraly

I rented a car from Hertz throught their web site for OKC, a usual 2 day rental for a AAA rate of $49.60/day a total of $127.
Just as background, I am a 5 star member of #1 Gold.
I arrive, pick up the contract, don't look at it and drive away, like I always do.
Later I look at the contract and see that the rate has changed to $136.99/day for a total of $279.82.
I checked my confirmation email just to make sure I didn't make a mistake.
I call the local office, they couldn't understand. I received a call back later telling me that they will honor the rate quoted, however the reservation I had does not guarantee the rate?????
(What is the point of having a confirmed reservation)
Is this something new? have others experienced this?
When I get back to LA I will write to Hertz Corp. to try to get a better answer.

HAHA...HAHAHA...that's hillarious that Hertz is stating that...
Check your reservation, usually it says something like the rate is guaranteed, but the price is not (something like that) because of taxes and fees that can change.

Was there a coupon or something they were missing? Or they didn't think was valid?
Or did they just randomly change the rate.
I've had coupons not apply or rate reductions where I've changed the reservation to a lower rate not show up before, but never anything that dramatic.
That's insane.

No coupons involved. I did go back and check on some future reservations and some say rate guaranteed others say rate subject to change.
This is a disgusting and sneaky way to charge higher rates. Hertz should be ashamed of themselves.:td:
I would advise all of you to go and double check all your future reservations and have printouts ready and double check contract before you leave the Hertz counter.

I had exactly the same situation this weekend (at SAN), but I caught it before leaving the lot. Booked, confirmed, at ~$90 - but the hangtag contract said ~$170.
Went back to the counter and was told what I must have done wrong to get that rate change, before they relented to the original rate.
It was shameful and ridiculous.

Hertz is so set up to do this too because they don't take some promotions and coupons off until you return the car, so the tag shows a rate that may or may not be based in reality. I never trust that as I usually have a discount that comes off on return.
They are probably just assuming so many people won't care or notice.....

It could just be an honest mistake on the employee's part. The program they use is ancient and complicated for new employees. The program is DOS based and yet they refer to it as "The Advanced System"...
Either way -- they shouldn't be giving you any trouble about finding a low rate. Their complaints should be directed to their region office where the region can then promptly delete it and move on to lunch.

I'm note sure that is the case. According to the counter person, #1 Gold contracts are not even touched at the location, they are just dowloaded and printed. The change was made at Hertz Corp.:td:

Most contracts are never actually "touched" by the location. Even if it a non-Gold member, the information that being entered very rarely has anything to do with the rate. However, whenever a PC is being applied, the discount must be entered in manually regardless if the contract is Gold or not.
Also, if the rate is changing at the time of return only then check to see if you are early. If you early, even if it early on the same day, it can change the rate to a higher rate especially if you booked at the last minute. When locations go into offsell status then they will reject rentals with fewer days. For example, if you reserved a car for 3 days but your plans changed and only need it for 2 then your rate will be extremely high because the rental would have declined in the beginning.
It could just be an honest mistake on the employee's part.
I'm now 3 for 3 in the last week on being overcharged and having to dispute it. I like Hertz, but this is getting ridiculous.
The whole point of #1 Gold is that I pay a premium to get on my way quickly - since I have to spend the time waiting at the counter to dispute charges anyway, I'm not sure what I'm paying for...

Is it the daily rate that's different or the total?
I assumed OP's case was a glitch of some sort - did you experience the same?
Hertz always calculates and lists the total without coupons which are applied at return (sometimes you have to remind them though). I've never experienced any modifications in daily rate in 100+ rentals over 3 years.

Update: Got to Omaha today 6/8, this time prepared with the confirmation printout in hand.
Get the contract, checked before I left the cubicle, sure enough the rate changed from $49.60 to $127 per day. (BTW there are no coupons involved for those who mentioned that) According to the agent who appologized profusely, Hertz is having a computer glitch issue with AAA rates. Maybe he is correct. Anyway he changed the rate and gave me a $30 certificate for future use as an appology. I mentioned that in over 10 years of renting last week was the first time there was a "computer glitch" with AAA rates. All I have to say is stay vigilant and check your contract before you leave the counter.

Must be a glitch. While changing the rate by a few $ may go unnoticed going from $40 to $120 is guaranteed to raise hell. Noone in the right mind at Hertz would try to pull this off.

Glitch or no, the customer service has been abhorrent.
My favorite part was when they told me that I must have selected "Web Check In" - when my confirmation clearly says "Service: Gold Canopy". And that next time I should be very careful not to select the "web check in" feature.
...? Why would a gold member ever choose to wait in line or use a kiosk instead of gold service?
