Finnair Plus - Free Plus points

View Full Version : Free Plus points

Today I got an interesting email (in Finnish) from Finnair about all Plus Silver members being rewarded with 5000 (non-status) points "to celebrate the summer". According to the email the points were already credited to my account. Well, this sounded good, so I went to check my account.... and... of course there were no 5000 points. However there was the following transaction:

31.05.2009 Oneworld + 5000

So at least the oneworld promo has finally posted. Some IT system they have.

Let's see if the promised 5K points post in a few days. Did other silvers receive something like this? What about gold/platinums?

PS. The email also mentioned AY opening a "Plus shop" on the internet soon - kinda like the Lufthansa Miles & More shop where you can buy overpriced stuff with cash + points combos. How excited I am - not.

As Platinum the offer is 15 000 points, and they had posted with a clear description 'With Compliments' next to the points on the on-line statement.

I still think that instead of free points they should bring back the annual 2 for the price of 1 redemption offer that they ran for two consecutive years.

This clears my surprise for the "with complimetns 10k" - obviously Golds got the same as Plats :)

This was a nice surprise, 15k "with compliments". I agree that the 2for1 promo was very good but then again it doesn't work all..

I got the email as well and the 10k had posted.

To my dismay, when checking my AY account for the bonus, I also noticed that my recent AY long-haul flight had credited to Finnair Plus when I wanted it to go to my BA Executive Club account.

I had changed the FF number to my BA number in online check-in and even showed the BA card at the Helsinki-Vantaa Platinum check-in desk. Still, the points posted to the wrong program. Even more interestingly, the second leg of the journey (Malaysia Airlines flight HKG-KUL with CX codeshare) did post to BA.

It's probably hopeless to try to get this reversed?

It's probably hopeless to try to get this reversed? Not sure, start with asking AY plus to revert the transaction. After they've done that it should be relatively easy to do a BAEC claim.

Actually, so far, this has turned out to be surprisingly easy.

I emailed the Finnair Plus email address for Golds and got an immediate answer. And just now I got a confirmation that they have reversed the transaction - someone actually mailed me on this at 9pm on Friday evening!

This promotion was a nice surprise and will surely contribute to my loyalty as an AY FF member (although I have been considering joining BA instead).

My compliments are finally showing up on the account. It's just a bit sad that they send out an email with "the points have *already* been deposited to your account" and still it took 2-3 days for them to show up. Maybe there just are far too many silvers around so the batch took a while to process.

10k points posted, and thanks for AY for the points.

Of course the fine print says that these are not tier points. No surprise, follows AY's "policy" from last few years nicely. At the same time, SK is having a campaign counting the status points twice for accruing elite status.

Somehow, I like SKs campaign more.

Some people over at the SK board complain that they'd prefer to have spendable points i/o status points.

Well, you can't please 'em all. The choice of course here is not so trivial - the SK promo awards double status points only, i.e. the double points are not usable towards award redemption. These AY points on the other hand are the exact opposite - redeemable but do not count towards status. I guess to please both parties they should be regular status miles that are also redeemable.

Flying from HEL to ARN in cheap eco yields me 195 points, and doing grocery shopping and paying with SK Mastercard yields me around 60 points... so you may see why I'd prefer the status-earning points more than the points for use.

I do grocery shopping almost daily, but can't say the same about flying to ARN... ;)
