Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Canada to Australia: flights involve domestic Aus. connection- steps in SYD?

We will be flying on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Sydney, and then connecting within a few hours on a QF flight to Brisbane.

What are the steps?

I presume we will be screened by an immigration officer in SYD (we have the electronic visa).

Will we pick up the luggage at Sydney, and then go through customs (we have to physically pick up the luggage at the first Canadian or US airline port of entry, even though we subsequently take another domestic Canadian or US flight; in Mexico on in the Schengen zone of Europe, the luggage is picked up at the final destination, if there is a flight within the last geographic region)?

I presume that we will take the luggage to the Qantas check-in counter (for domestic flights) - will that be a separate terminal building, or the same terminal building (or will be there be a connection convey belt just outside of customs, as is the case in many Canadian airports)?

Once in the Arrivals Area, turn right and follow the signs to the "Train Station". Once you reach the elevators that head down to the train station, look right again. There's a corridor here to your right which takes you straight to the Qantas Transfers Desk.

There should be signs indicating the directions to the Transfers Desk throughout the arrivals area (though I'm not entire sure of this), however following the signs to the train station and then turning right instead of taking the elevators should take you there.

Thanks, for the information.

In terms of the luggage/baggage question - do I pick up the bags in Brisbane, or in Sydney. If I pick them up in Sydney, to I take the bags through customs? If the latter is the case, where do I (re-)deposit my bags, for ultimate routing to Brisbane?

You pick up bags at SYD baggage claim after immigration but before customs. You clear customs and you clear quarantine (separate inspection). Take bags on free cart to QF transfer desk (instructions above). Get BP and drop bags at QF transfer desk. Queue to get bus to separate QF domestic terminal. OK?

This is the advantage to flying QF domestically (as opposed to DJ). There is no charge for this QF bus, which will take you airside to the QF domestic terminal. Also I arrived early in SYD recently and the helpful QF agent put me on an earlier flight (to CBR). Normally in Australia, you cannot stand-by for an earlier flight (unless you have a full fare ticket).
