I'm thinking of buying a new Mac for graduate school, and I was wondering if some folks could help me with the opportunities available using my Amex. I personally have a SPG and a Blue card, and I have access (read, i have cards in my name that are in the account of someone else who would let me reimburse) Gold rewards and Plat. I'd obviously like to use the SPG card (points, points), but am willing to consider others.

Specifically, Apple just changed the specs on their current (white) model, which is attractive @ $999 ($949 with the ed discount). However, I'm worried that at the WWDC next week, Apple will debut something new/cool that I'd want to buy instead. Is there any way that I could buy the machine now and protect it using purchase protection to guarantee that I could return it after Apple's 14 day return period if I decide what comes out next week is better? I thought I saw that the max was $300 per item, did I get that right? Is there any other way?

Also, is there any way to use Amex's benefits to extend the AppleCare warranty on the product?

Does the Plat offer anything that would be helpful? Is there anything that I haven't considered that I should? Thanks a ton.

Plat will add a year onto the end of Applecare. Also, it'll cover loss/theft/breakage for the first 90 days.

SPG, HHonors and Rewards Gold Preferred offer that too, but the limits may be different on the Plat?

Platinum is 10k/occurance & 50k/year for loss/theft/breakage.

I believe warranty is the same for Plat and below.

... interestingly, they've got the PDF's switched on the Warranty T&C... Centurian is an extra year, Plat & below 3 extra years :)

My guess is that what OP really wants details on is Return Protection, though.

Why not just wait a week and see what they come out with?

Return protection is $300 per occurance with a yearly cap of $1000.00

If the new one supposedly comes out next week (less than 14 days), why not just buy the one you want now and not open it and then decide once the new model comes out. I fail to see a problem if its less than 14 days and the laptop is unopened/unused.

If you wanted to, you could "accidentally" drop the laptop and have it break and THEN it would be covered by purchase protection. As it stands now, you're only eligible for return protection and that is capped at a certain $ amount.

Not sure how rigid that is.

I have seen them refund a Lenovo laptop of much more than 1000 (one item) after Lenovo refused to accept the (used) item back. This is with regular platinum.

Just call and ask - you may get lucky.
