I've made two solo motorcycle trips there recently from Houston. One in Oct 08 and the other in Feb 09. I will be going again soon. I find Mexico to be very safe. When I cross the border I simply ride directly on to the interior checkpoint and stay clear of the border area. The narco war casualties are for the most part narco-to-narco, or narco-to-police. The narcos are not waiting to ambush your average tourist, though some tourists do get caught in the crossfire. There is petty crime against tourists, but I find this not to be anymore common than in other places I have toured. The Swine Flu thing was also way overblown, IMO.

Well, I arrived in Mexico 07 July and am still here today...24 July.
Fell in love with Amecameca, its friendly people, small town atmosphere, fantastic views of the volcanoes (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=89874&id=538018404&l=09cbfa81ef), and spring-like climate.
Oh....and $9.50US per night hotel, and 45 cents per hour high-speed Interet!!! Great hiking opportunities too...just hop on the combi for 50 cents to some small, local town and head toward the mountains until you reach green space and mountain views.
I think I could live here on $20US per day!!!!!
