For the pros and enthusiasts here...wondering how folks insure their gear for international travel. I travel with a fair bit, and it has given me reason to think more than once...I have renters insurance that covers personal items when traveling, but if something does happen, I hate to make a claim that mucks with my overall insureability, so to speak. Any other options?

I am wondering the same thing, hoping there is a specific policy.

BTW- for a lot of international travel, it is a good idea to register expensive equipment with the host country so they know you brought it with you, saves on taxes.

I seem to recall reading about something called a "carnet" used by professional photographers.

I have Traveler's for homeowners insurance, and we added a separate itemized valuable items policy for my engagement ring and photography equipment. I think the photo portion was only about $50/year, since the camera equipment was about $2500. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I left my camera in the back of a taxicab on the way to EZE, and it was never found. The policy covered me worldwide, and I got a check for the original covered amount minus about 10% for depreciation since the camera was about 2 years old. The claims person from Traveler's said that it wouldn't hurt our general homeowner's insurability since the valuable items policy was considered a separate policy.

I don't know if the cost/coverage would be any different for camera equipment that was used for professional purposes. Mine was not.

I'm pretty sure that is simply for declaring the items that you own so that you aren't dinged for duty on return home, not for insurance purposes.

I can tell you that I have a policy from State Farm called a "personal articles" policy (or something like that). Homeowners would cover my camera, laptop, etc. if the house burned down or was broken into. "Personal Articles" goes above and beyond covering even some forms of "accidental damage" and even covers simply losing the items. It has international coverage and is good anywhere and everywhere. I have about $7,000 worth of coverage for things like laptops, cameras, wedding/engagement rings, etc. It is item-specific. You have to register the exact serial number for coverage, and one-off customs of something even require photographs I think. For my coverage I'm paying something like $30-60/year (I honestly cannot remember as it is folded into House/Car and other stuff).

Really worth it I think.

All of my camera gear (lenses, speedlights and bodies) are on a separate rider on my homeowners insurance. I dont remember cost, but something like 1,00 a hundred a year.

I had an A2E and lenses stolen in Munich years ago. No questions asked, replacement value paid upun sending in police report.
