Don't remember this being asked - is it easy/possible to do a MR to KOA and not have to re-clear security? Thinking about doing MR that way but don't want to get stuck - also since return would use paper upgrade, any problems to deal w/ if we check-in on the secure side vs. ticket counter? Since the paper certs might be requested/etc.

I was there in December and don't see why you would have any problems, but I wasn't doing an MR so can't speak from experience.

Doing a turn in KOA would be easy. I'm actually doing a MR there next month. Getting the paper upgrade might throw a wrench into it. You could probably check in on the secure side.

If you had to reclear security it would be cutting it close. There generally are two United flights heading out about the same time, so the security line can be long since it's such a small terminal.

The security line is scary....been there a few times and even with an hour to check in and clear security, I barely made it.

You MR-ers are a different breed! I couldn't imagine going to KOA and not spending at least 24 hours or so to enjoy such a beautiful place.

Yeah, that's my rule of thumb- MRs are for boring places... and even a SEA-PDX-SFO-PDX-SFO trip (segment run for MVPG) can be rigged to give you lunch at the SF Farmer's Market.

A little trick I like to do is to confirm the paper upgrade and then check for U availability at the 72 hour mark. If there are still U seats open, I change back to coach, then immediately request the comp upgrade and it goes through right away. This way I can horde the paper certs for when I really need them, like when traveling with 2 or more companions or on routes with low upgrade odds.
