Sean Durfy, the chief executive of WestJet Airlines Ltd., borrowed a page out of his predecessor's playbook yesterday by taking a swipe at rival Air Canada as it struggles to head off an impending cash crunch, declaring the country's largest airline to be "on the ropes."
Just as former CEO Clive Beddoe, now chair of WestJet's board, couldn't resist highlighting Air Canada's woes during its 2003-04 restructuring, Durfy said the former flag carrier's well-publicized liquidity issues, combined with what he described as "irrational pricing," suggest Air Canada is once again in serious trouble.
"It sounds like our competitor is on the ropes," Durfy said during a WestJet investor conference yesterday in Calgary. "They have a lot of pressure on them today, in my opinion."
