I was on CX 888 HKG-YVR few days ago, for almost the whole flight , the seatbelt sign was on.Many people need to used the toilet urgently (including me)But they kept saying "ladies and gentlement , the seatbelt sign is still on,please remain seated with your seat belts on,as we are currently flying over turbulence area"
I dont get it, they flight was very smooth and its crusing !
Why dont they let us use the washroom and yet they are walking around.

Again, I admire your enthusiasm and your posts, but as to the purpose of this thread...i??? Okay, there was turbulence. It happens. And I'm sure you've flown before - the FAs can walk around when you can't. It happens before takeoff, like when they check your seatbelt. And it happens after takeoff, when they start preparing things and don't want a hoard of pax blocking their way. It happens during turbulence so they can reduce the very small liability of a pax getting hurt if bad turbulence hits the aircraft.
A secret: if you really have to go, they will let you. They prefer you not take a crap in their seats.

sneak into the washroom when theres nobody in there so you don't have to stand there waiting, obviously the FA would tell you to sit down if they saw you waiting outside the washroom haha :p

I don't know if it's fear of lawsuit or what, but the last few flights I took with Cathay the FAs are very stingy about people using toilets during the "seatbelt sign." I saw a few FAs chase down the passengers and ask them to go back to their seats (very politely I might add) and even saw a few instances when they kept knocking on the doors and get them to go back to their seats.
There must be a new policy that Cathay wants the FAs to be very aggressive to get people seated during "seatbelt light"

Did anyone here notice that a CO pax has been paralyzed as a result of hitting her head in the bathroom during turbulence on a flight just a few days ago?
I would wager that most airlines are going to tighten up on such movement
(at least in the short run)

CX has an ongoing problem with people who disregard the seatbelt warnings like goibg to the loo on rotation or 2 minutes before landing. The real scrum develops when passengers are out of their seats and grabbing their belongings before the aircraft has arrived at the gate.
I guess they are just so fed up with the lack of common sense displayed at times that they have decided to work-to-rule,

Isn't the Seat Belt sign for Economy passengers only ? (just joking)...
On AA, F and J passengers start going as soon as the flight has reached some altitude, but Y pax do get barked at when it happens...

I have to admit, on one of the flights the pilot simply refuses to turn off the fasten seatbelt light because supposively we are going through an area of turbulence. However, besides a few bumps the plane is literally smooth sailing for a good 20 minutes. A few pax tries to go to the bathroom and got hollered down. I was holding it for a good 40 minutes until it's either pee in my pants or go to the toilet. I sneak up and advance to the toilet like a ninja and quickly open and close the door without locking it, do my thing, and got back to my seat.

The last time I was on a flight with seat belt signs on for the entire flight was a MU flight from Wuxi to HKG. It was a short flight, but the sign was ignored by both the passengers and the crew.
It is hard to imagine having stuck in your seat for an entire long-haul flight. If the sign is continuously lit, the chance is that it will be ignored.

In the 773ER lavatories, they have a sign lit saying "Return to seat", which made me thought, which seat are they talking about? The loo seat? lol

Lots of pax either young, old, educated or not, frequent flyer or first time, different races, just ignore the seatbelt sign whenever they can, I'm afraid they won't learn untill something really bad happen to them or somesone they know and be sorry for the rest of their life........ Sad!

Why can't they put a seat belt in the lav?
A few years ago I was on an AA flight, SJU-BOS, back when they used Airbuses on this route. I'll spare you the digestive details, but I found myself really having to go while we were on final approach. I was in the front row. I just got up, walked very quickly forward to the lav (right behind cockpit door), and as I walked by a surprised FA in his seat, I just said "I'm about to be sick." No complaints, objections or argument from him. I was sitting in the lav while the plane landed. Finished what I was doing, and, feeling much better, returned to my seat during taxi to the gate.

While 99% of the time it's true nothing of great harm will happen. However, the company is always worried that freaking 1% of freak accident might happen. Like a last minute turbulence that throws you around, like a bumpy landing that knock you off your seat and break your bones. It has happened and it likely will happen again and companys are doing their best to avoid that. They don't want to be suit and pay millions in lawyers and compensation.

I saw this happen in J on my last BOM-HKG flight.
However, we were about 10-15 minutes away from landing so at that stage nobody should have been in the toilet anyway.

Easy for you to say. For people with weak kidney when they have to go then they have to go. Or it's piss in the pants and I'm sure the F/A will appreciate that much better.

In my HKG-SFO flight a few days ago, a lady went to the restroom when the "fasten seat belt" sign was on. She was turned back by a FA but then went again. The FA recited a "disclaimer" to her and let her in.

That was about an hour after take off. The sign had been off for about half an hour, but we ran into turbulence. She got up just when the sign was back on again (perfectly bad timing). I was in 37C. She was in 37A. 37B was unoccupied. So I saw that happened.

This is a very simple solution to end all this madness. Next time.... pee on the floor near to the toilet and make sure the FA see you. Trust me, they will get it.

The same thing happened here, i did not have a good flight with CX for the HKG-YVR sector only, it was a full flight and maybe the Flight Attendant was more aggresive on the pack flight.
Once Flight Attendant kept asking me to close my window shades 3 times , i got fed up and opened my mouth to ask her why?
She said , " we will be flying through the daylight very soon"
I was like ......... But i want to see the surroundings.
After that she didnt bother about me anymore

I'm sorry, but you have to be considerate to other passengers too. If you want to see the surroundings, go to the back of the plane exit door, open the little shade up and have a peek. There you won't bother anyone. If I was there and the person beside me keeps opening the shade up with the sunlight shining at my face during sleeping, I would be pretty mad.

A degree of common sense and basic manners is called for.
For example if your flight is landing. say, at 17h00, I see no problem with people having sunlight in the cabin from 3-4 hours before that. Pax are entitled to do whatever they can to let their body clock adjust.
Those that want to sleep in darkness for an entire 12 hour flight should use eye shades and sleeping tablets.

Funny this is mentioned. On my recent to-back trip between JFK-HKG-JFK there are also people opening their shades, and I mean OPENING their shades, and more than one culprit. In the past the FA would hunt them down and shut them up, but on BOTH flights (to and back) the FAs simply ignores the situation (as they walk up and down offering water)
Is there a change in cabin regulation on shades or do the FAs simply don't want to deal with them?
