I was pretty satisfied with my Egyptair-flights this year, but also pretty astonished how Egyptians use their cellphones on the ground. There is not really a sign of an etiquette for cellphone-use in Egypt.

Now this nuisance goes to the skies...

For me, the chapter MS is closed. Sorry. :td:

EGYPTAIR Selects OnAir To Provide Inflight Connectivity

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- EGYPTAIR has picked OnAir to install full Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir inflight passenger communications services on its twin-aisle Airbus 330-300 aircraft.

In a statement here today, OnAir said the services would be delivered over an 18-month period, starting August 2010, and would operate on European, North American and Middle East routes.

EGYPTAIR passengers will be able to stay connected inflight using their own mobile phones or smartphones to make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages and emails, and access the Internet," it said.

EGYPTAIR chairman, Captain Sherif Saad Eldin Galal, said the airline was constantly looking to improve its offering to passengers.

"The latest technology from OnAir will help us further differentiate our service, and enable customers to stay in touch with colleagues, family and friends while they travel," he said.

OnAir chief executive officer, Benoit Debains, said the Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir services would provide travellers with a complete solution.

He said Mobile OnAir used the industries most advanced and extensive infrastructure for mobile communications, along with Inmarsat SwiftBroadband, high capacity services from Inmarsat 4th generation satellites.

"This gives EGYPTAIR passengers the best reach and performance available today," he said.

Should we then deprive the Egyptians of their mobile phones.

No, but e.g. Qatar Airways is aware of the problem and introduces "silent connectivity" only. If you have already been on an Egyptian train, you will perhaps understand why an Egyptair-nightflight could become a nightmare for people not having the habitude of the Egyptian cellphone-habits (...carefully worded).

For me, MS became a no-go-airline.

On my recent CAI-BKK red eye flight, most Egyptians fell asleep during the flight. Your interesting theory is "the mobile phones" will keep them awake.
Maybe the Egyptians already know talk therapy is better than meds for chronic insomnia?;)

Just my two cents.
