Rented in Dus and dropped in Toulouse (tls) a VW Passat Wagon Diesel with 8K km on it. Rate was 458 euro for a week. Easy pick up and drop off, car handled really well (loved it). Did not need international drivers license, just USA. Just hope those French speed cameras did not get me (1500 EURO FOR 50 KPH over the limit), wish I had known about them before driving in France and Belgium.

DUS is to me one of the best rental locations in Germany. Consistently excellent personal service.

Would you drive 50 km/h over the limit at home, and not expect to be fined?

Granted I know nothing about France and Belgium so don't know how driving habits change, but from riding with cab drivers and a car we chartered for the day in Italy, I'm pretty sure someone driving the speed limit would actually cause an accident. On our way to the airport in Rome we were going 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone and were definitely getting passed by a number of cars.

and at home, if you saw lots of drivers speeding, would you follow them?

The debate here is the excessive fees for speeding, not if speeding is illegal. You're correct, someone should not drive over the limit because the rest of traffic is, however, should that be a fine of 1000E+? Get off your Horse.

I was ticketed in the netherlands for going 110 km/h in a 100 zone by a traffic camera. Ticket was 25 euros, and Hertz in Brussels was kind enough to send me a ticket with a 10 euro processing fee, even after paying close to 2500 USD for two weeks for a for focus diesel manual.
Needless to say, I didn't pay the netherlands or hertz (they sent no english instructions and no online credit card payment options, despite tracking me down in the US). They've sent me several follow ups (5 euros a month for not paying) but those stopped after 6 months. I haven't been back to the EU, so who knows what is on my record.
