I'm looking for a 5 star hotel in Hong Kong with the following:

- great location
- awesome, free pool for guests
- free fitness facilities for guests
- ideally a concierge lounge/floor with breakfast/snacks for VIPs
- near public transport

Don't know much about hotels in Hong Kong but I know that the Peninsula, Oriental, W, and JW Marriott all look good. Any suggestions??

Got back from HK today. The Peninsula and Intercontinental Kowloon certainly looked nice, but way out of my budget. (Besides, I'm a fat bloke who can't swim...)

There is a HK forum at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hong-kong-436/

I stayed at the Conrand Hong Kong back in March and loved it.
- On the Hong Kong Side-high floors have great views of Kowloon
- Nice Pool
- Excellent Fitness Facilities
- Excellent Lounge for VIPs (If you are HH Diamond free access)
- At the lower floors of the mall an large upscale mall and Subway right below it

Just got back and can confirm that the W is a great hotel, only open for 9 months now, rooms are fabulous, great breakfast (a bit on the pricey side, even for HKG). Downsides are no lounge and location is not great if you'll be spending more time on the City side than the Kowloon side.

IC fits the bill.
A bit less ideal in location (based on your description), the Four Seasons has even more class. Better yet, arrange to have hotel send limo to airport for pick up!

Hong Kong has some of the world's finest hotels. There are many 5 star hotels in various locations. Even many of the 4 star hotels would qualify as 5 star in many other places.

Great location depends on why you are there and where you need to be. Tourist? Business? If you can give us that info I am sure that you will get many very educated suggestions.

I would venture to say that most (if not all) 5 star hotels have a concierge floor.

All will have gyms, some will have pools. As to which specifically and the charge, check the hotel web sites.

I have not stayed in too many of the 5 star hotels (I tend to be on a 4 star budget) but my personal favorite is the Peninsula.

I agree that it would help what you goal for HK is. Tourism? Business? Hong kong is pretty big, so there's no one "best" location. Personally, I like staying on the HK Island. Less touristy and you get a better feel for how folks live in HK. Travel to the Kowloon side and it's a lot more catered towards tourists, which is good and bad.

Totally worth reminding: the best view of Hong Kong habour is from KOWLOON SIDE, not Hong Kong side for the skyline.

IC / Peninusla / Shearton are your choice

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I will be sleeping there overnight to catch my flight the next afternoon. So when I say good location I mean that I'd love to have a place that has great surroundings for shopping (cheap but nice - i can get designer boutiques in the US) and eating.

Pool is a definite. So perhaps the Peninsula?

I always stay at the IC. Overlooking the harbour is great from this location.

If pool is important to you, the Peninsula, the FS, or the Grand Hyatt are good choices. The MO pools are rather small and indoors. The Pen pool is kind of indoors/outdoors but it is very nice and the view is great. The biggest hotel pool (50 meters) is the GH.

The Pen is the best choice if you are wanting ambiance and spending a lot of time at the spa. But rooms are HKD 4200. I have a few hours shopping trip to HKG next week (less than 24) and just booked the Evergreen for HKD 350. No pool, 3* and tiny rooms I'm sure, but free internet and a great location for shopping (next to Ladies' Market and MTR). I'll partake of the Pen at the Wing (F dining room is catered by Peninsula) and spend the HKD 4K difference at the market for some grade A+ Hermes instead.

Grade A+ Hermes are from Shenzhen ;)

Check out Langham Place Hong Kong, amazing spa and pools. Good location near cheap local shopping area. Great Michelin Star restaurant. A great concierge club of course, but no view

Langham Place costs HKD 1500-2000 depending on your dates, making it the cheapest 5 star hotel. I've stayed there and liked it, but the Pen is only double that price these days so I'd rather stay at the Pen half the time. Have mixed feelings about LP despite being a pretty good hotel.

I think I will stick to Starwood because of the 2 night promotion they are running. That means my choices are

1. Le Méridien Cyberport
100 Cyberport Road Hong Kong, · China

2. W Hong Kong
1 Austin Road West, Kowloon Station, Kowloon Hong Kong, · China

3. Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers

20 Nathan Road Kowloon Hong Kong, · China Phone (852) 2369 1111 · Fax (852) 2739 8707

Any ideas? Best-funnest area? (any good cheap massage places nearby?!)

Best pool and service? thanks...

The Le Meridien is quite a way away from anything - next to a bizarre (and quite empty) "high tech centre" which was part of a deal which involved the government gifting Richard Li the rights to build a fancy new property development. It is, apparently a nice hotel, good restaurants and service, but if you want "the action" then you are a 20-30 minute cab/bus ride away.

The W is also a bit isolated - in the summer you would want to get a taxi from there to anywhere (5 mins to the centre of TST).

Nathan Road is a busy tourist shopping street (full of rip-off & scams - beware) you'll get hassled by touts for watches, suits, etc. It's right next to the MTR (more convenient than the MTR station at the W which is actually not well-connected except to the airport).

The tradition nightlife centres are Lan Kwai Fong & Wanchai, neither of which is adjacent to any of the three hotels, but the Sheraton is the most convenient since you can hop across on the Star Ferry at TST and then walk to LKF (from the Central Star Ferry pier) or Wanchai (from the Wanchai Ferry Pier).

No idea about pools, sorry.

For massage do you want with or without happy ending?

It depends your major activity area will be Kowloon or Hong Kong .. Sheraton if Kowloon, W if Hong Kong according to subway connection.

If you mainly travel on taxi then either one is fine. Also as christep mention if you are exploring the town, skip Le Méridien

TST MTR is a far better place to start from than Kowloon MTR if you want to see most places on HK Island. The problem with Kowloon MTR is that it brings you into HK station, not Central. Which is fine if you want to get out and go to somewhere around IFC/Exchange Square (and you can easily get there from the Sheraton on the Star Ferry), but otherwise to change to the Island line you have a 5-10 minute walk between HK Station and Central Station. Coming from TST you just get off at Admiralty and walk 30 metres across to the adjacent platform.

I've got a long weekend in late July in Hong Kong and have an Expedia UK voucher to use so my choices are somewhat limited to brand I can use with the special rate program. ie: no Starwood, Marriott, Hilton, IHG. Given that I've narrowed down my choices to the following. Happy to hear opinions:

Hotel Nikko £60
Langham Place £74
The Langham HK £85
Marco Polo £84
Harbour View HK £93
The Mira £87
Hyatt Regency HK Sha Tin £63
Lanson Place £77
Renaissance Kowloon £67

There are a number of others in the 4* range that are priced quite attractively:

Royal Pacific £47
Hotel Panorama Rhombus £62
Cosmopolitan Hotel £51
Royal Park £43
Kowloon Hotel £43
Empire Hotel £39

I could go on quite a bit more but you get my point. After using my voucher I'm looking at not much money for reasonable hotels. I'm not particular about view but do prefer something fairly mainstream, clean, convenient and with some good amenities such as a pool, gym, etc...

In HKG now and thought I'd leave my quick thoughts.

After touring the Sheraton and Peninsula (and some other properties), I am EXTREMELY happy with my choice of the W. Yes, the location is not in the heart of the major Kowloon shopping area like those other properties, but the style of this hotel more than makes up for it.

Having toured the gym & pool areas at the Sheraton and Peninsula it is clear that the W's is much, much better. Everything is very stylish, and not in an annoying way (i.e. Le Parker Meridien in NYC). The room, meanwhile, is stunning - there is no way these other properties could touch it. 42" plasma behind a mirror, all dark wood everywhere, super shower/bathroom, long chaise lounge in the room, and, most importantly to me, huge windows with the best view this side of the island. Thanks for everyone's help. ^

surprised nobody's mentioned FS. awesome pools. HK side is closer to most places you'd (i'd?) want to be anyway

How about Knutsford Terrance in Kowloon? It's a 10 minutes walk from Sheraton. Several years ago, a friend of mine told me it's the LKF of Kowloon.

yeah, Knutsford Terrace is throbbing these days. More bars and restaurants than last year even.

I prefer that to LKF, there are fewer gwailos and a much more local atmosphere. Much fewer gwailo tossers trying to pull anything and everything.
