We will be driving frorm Sydney one morning, staying overnight, and return to Sydney the next afternoon/evening.
We would like to stay in a good hotel or motel - good quality - at least the basic amenities - and a good price. Any recommendations?

what is your price point?
There are 3 of us - myself, my wife, and my daughter.
Let us say US$100 - $150 per room, per night.

Stayed at Parklands Apartment Hotel (http://www.theparklands.com.au/)for a week or so about 5 years ago. It was a nice property. A little out of the CBD (should not be an issue seeing you have a car) but only 10 minutes walk to the Dickson shopping centre, which has a good selection of restaurants as well.
Would imagine there is good public transport (in the context of Canberra that is, I don't know what their PT is like) nearby.
There is a reasonable choice of configuration and if you shop around I should think you can get something in your price range.
It is also on wotif.com (http://www.wotif.com)(and presumably some other 'last minute' booking sites) so if you're willing to leave the booking till 4 weeks or so out you may be able to get a good price.
PS. I reckon wotif.com gives a better description than the hotel's website.
