khabi khabi, welcome to FlyerTalk. I've moved your post into the California forum, to give you a better shot at the information you seek.

It would be helpful to know if you have any hotel brand loyalties. San Diego is a large city with many hotels to chose from, with all of the usual brands. Also, where do you want to be based? Gaslamp Quarter? Coronado Island? La Jolla? Del Mar? The possibilities are endless.

Here's some reading to get you started:

Here are two restaurants where we had excellent meals. I won't say they are "the best", since our sampling is small, but we did enjoy both.

In the Gaslamp - Chive Restaurant

In La Jolla - George's at the Cove

George's @ the Cove, Ocean Terrace is an excellent choice. Be sure to make reservations well in advance. For dinner, the Fish Market near Seaport Village is a good restaurant with a killer water view. Mostly seafood.

I've had great meals from Bully's in Del Mar, though I have to tell you that it has been almost 5 years since I've eaten there.

If you are going to be down around the harbor, check out one of the dinner or brunch cruises. I had a great time with some friends on a brunch cruise last summer though that may have had more to do with the champagne. ;)

George's is a good option but be forewarned, La Jolla can be a foul mess around the 4th.

So can Del Mar. Don't even think of being on the Coast Highway on July 4 unless you really truly positively must. It's final days of the Del Mar Fair, so between that and the beach, traffic is fierce.

Ocean Beach is usually nice, I have lived there for years and it is a nice fit always for a chill day.

...any ideas where to stay....

A few years ago Mrs. cblaisd and I spent a few days (including July 4) at the Hilton Harbor Island. (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww1.hilton.com%2Fen_US%2Fhi%2Fho tel%2FSANAHHF-Hilton-San-Diego-Airport-Harbor-Island-California%2Findex.do&ei=Jr8mSp2WOpmStAPYtpGfBg&rct=j&q=hilton+san+diego+airport+harbor+island&usg=AFQjCNGfGJ7b2uR0D7ogAEA_EgdNrgBGAg)

We had a high floor with a balcony and a great view of both the July 4 fireworks and the airport ;) The restaurant at the Hilton is decent (and they had some of the best coconut shrimp I've ever eaten)
