All -

Sorry to intrude outside my normal turf.

My family and I are traveling on QF from BNE to SYD in June. We will be bringing car seats with us for the children while driving our rental car, but they're large enough that they don't need them on board the aircraft.

On UA, a car seat does not count as part of the normal baggage allowance if it's checked.

Does anyone know if it's the same on QF or is it part of the checked baggage allowance?

And before anyone worries, we'll be in Y...

Thanks much,
Greg

Thanks - the website was silent on whether the car seats counted as part of the checked baggage allowance, or whether it is additional "bonus" baggage as it is in the US.

We recently flew BNE-SYD and had 1 infant, one child over 2 (2.5) and checked in a buggy and a car seat. They muttered something about there wasn't a car seat 'free' allowance for over 2's, but as we had an infant it was ok although they shouldn't really let us as we had a buggy as well. ???? (The car seat was for the older child). I got the impression they didn't really know exactly what was what!!!

Be aware Australia only permitts car seats made in Australia to be used - all other makes do not meet OZ standards. Our car seat was not an Australian made one and we tried to keep it out of sight of the rental car people in case they decided we could not use it and try and charge us extra for one of their's.

Does a 2 year old need to use a car seat on board the aircraft? Or can they just be strapped into the seat?

We start them early in California...

(although I was driving on my dad's lap when I was 12 in Ohio)

if a child is required by law to use a car seat in a vehicle for safety reasons, surely the same logic applies in a plane?

in both situations they would not necessarily need to based on their ability to sit in a car/plane seat without assistance; however it has been mandated that it is safer in a car, so by logic safer in a plane as well
