I bought a expresscard card reader so that I could read sd, mmc, sdhc etc on my laptop. Ok well I don't have a mac so expresscard is pretty useless, so that's on the way back to newegg, but

1. can someone point me to a 11 in 1 or 20 in 1, or whatever in 1 pcmcia card that can read xd, sd, and memory stick pro cards so that I can transfer everything when I am on my trip. Thanks very much for the help ahead of time.

Why does it have to be pcmcia? They make perfectly good usb ones, that are both cheap and small and easy to carry. Here's one for less than $2 from dealextreme

I think this is the one I bought for my daughter.

Buy a spare or two in case you lose one. :) Are they 20 in 1? No. What do you really need?

search around there, you should be able to find a usb reader that works for you.

I have a usb one, and they pretty nice, it's just I have some many things I figured why not try and find one that's a pcmcia that can do all of that and also stay hooked into my laptop so that I don't have to have another item to carry in my travel bag.

I guess if I get a usb one it's fine, but it would be nice to just have one less.

When I made my list, I was trying to have a short list, but those were all things I considered essential.

anyways, I do greatly appreciate the help. the few that I have found for pcmcia I seem to have to worry about sdhc cards..

yeah, that's what I see too. I found one that does all that you want except sdhc.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=SDAD-67-A10&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=15236480940014494370&ei=4jgYSv2cDqiEtAP3jN2SDw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4#ps-sellers

That's the problem. The USB ones are so cheap, it's going to be hard to find a pcmcia one.

Lots of Windows-based laptops have ExpressCard slots, so I don't understand the Mac comment.

It must be an old laptop. New ones tend to have both express card and memory card slots.

apparently when i was buying my laptop which is a bit old but i don't think it's older than a year I could have gotten a expresscard slot, that's why i originally bought the express card addon, because i just did a search on my tablet model, but my particular one only came with pcmcia.

And I can read sd cards, just not sdhc.

well i went out to microcenter today and went ahead and bought a usb converter. I would have liked to have found a pcmcia one, but i guess that technology is going away, so I bought a usb everything one. I nice thing is that the cable that it uses is the same one for my garmin and my awod etc..

(warning, very stupid question coming)

Dont mean to hijack this thread... but I have a related question. What does one need a MicroSD card reader for....? If it has no audio output or screen to check out stuff... why would one use a reader...?

My Sony Vaio (which is now 3 years old) has an expresscard slot.

my g1 phone can record pics onto a microsd card, it would be easier to transfer them to my computer that way or to put movies onto my g1.

plus some new cameras are going microsd..

How does the reader help in transfering files if it has no cable connection... or is my reader bluetooth equipped and I dont know it...???

Sorry for the cascada of stupid questions.... :o

gaucho ... what?

A memory card reader has slots for the memory card(s) it can read on one or more ends, and on the other end, some sort of interface that you can plug into your computer. Usually USB. Look at some of the links posted earlier in this thread for examples.

For uSD (micro SD) cards, you can usually get a card that looks like a full size SD card, but has a little slot on the top for a uSD card. Then you can read whatever data is on the card in whatever manner you would normally use to read a regular SD card.

Some computers have card reader slots that can take them, for others, you need a usb memory card reader. USB means it has a USB interface on the other (bottom) end. They also make express card and pccard versions of memory "readers". The "reader" is badly named, probably historically named. If you have one of them, you can both read and write the data on the memory card. When you plug the memory card or "reader" with a memory card inserted into it, into your computer, it shows up as if it's a disk drive.

I have absolutely no idea what you have, Mr Gaucho. Can you take a picture of it and post it here?

This is an adapter that fits in the ExpressCard slot and has a an opening to accept various types of memory cards. I have one of these in my Thinkpad T60 where I otherwise have no use for an ExpressCard slot and the machine has no SD card slot. They even make a version to accept CF cards.

ExpressCard is really based on USB interface, just a design without the cable.
