Hello everyone,
this is my first post, so I hope I am in the right forum.
My fiance and I are getting married in September and
since we have been living in Ireland for the past few
years (I'm German) I would like to follow the tradition
to wear something old, something new, something borrowed
and something blue.
My question is what does a bride typically borrow ?
So far I can only think of a necklace or bracelet or maybe a
watch.
Any other suggestions ?
Thanks

You could also borrow earrings--maybe pearl or diamond studs.
Blue could be an embroidered handkerchief.
Best Wishes!

Something blue can be the garter. Something borrowed is usually a piece of jewelery, earrings, necklace or bracelet. Something new is your dress or also a piece of jewelery that your groom gives you as a wedding present. A bible can also be a borrowed thing, that the priest uses.
Best wishes.

Thanks for your replies.
I already have the blue
thing,which is a garter
my friend gave me. I
guess I am going to
borrow a necklace or
bracelet from a friend
or relative.

Another old custom is a "sixpence in her shoe". I used a penny from the year I was born.

Georgia Peach, where did you get the penny from the year you
were born ? I recently found out the complete poem or whatever
you call it goes " something old, something new, something borrowed,
something blue and a sixpence in her shoe, however my impression
was that not too many brides bother with the coin.

My mother put it in my baby book, and told me what it was for. The penny was even more sentimental because she died several years before I married.

I've also heard of using a penny from the year your parents were married - if they're still married, of course - for good luck.

I am an Irish bride who will be married 5 years  on October 1st and I remember doing the "old, new, borrowed, blue" tradition which went as follows :-
Old : my engagement ring
New : my watch
Borrowed : my wedding dress
Blue : a little garter with a blue ribbon.
Incidentally, I presented my garter to the next bride to be as a gift - I've seen this happen before at weddings & thought it was a lovely idea

So, to give an update I am going to borrow something from one of my married
girlfriends. Don't know what it is yet. The old thing will be the engagement ring
the new thing my wedding dress, the blue thing is a garter belt and the borrowed thing,
well I have to wait and see..

Congratulations! How exciting!
One of my best friends got married to an English fellow, and her father-in-law to-be gave her an actual sixpence for her shoe. I thought that was romantic. :)
Let us know how the wedding goes!

"Borrowed" can be anything, really. Jewelry, the wedding veil, wedding gown...best wishes to you!
