United will give you the money back, usually as a credit to your credit card used to make the payment. Takes about a month.

Ditto with CO. Whatever airline this is should refund your taxes paid.

If I cancelled the reservations and get back money paid for taxes, what am I left with?

Not quite sure what you meant by that, but on a mileage award ticket, your miles would be put back into your account if you paid a fee which varies depending on the airline, e.g., AA $100, UA $75. Except for the mileage reinstatement fee, you would be back where you started before you claimed the award. Is that what you meant?

Some airlines charge expedite fees. I'm guessing those are lost too. Does anyone know if that's right?
