Prices were high last weekend at SFO. The best I could find for a 2-day weekend rental, using the Hertz 50% off weekends for a midsize was over $100. Interestingly, the best price I found from Avis was $131 and that was for a Prius!
So, I decided to try my luck making a bid on Priceline. I've used PL many times for hotels, but never for car rentals or flights. I bid $18/day for a standard car and my bid was quickly accepted. The total, after airport and PL fees, was $62.45 and it was from Hertz.
When I went to pick up the car at SFO, the CSR had a little trouble finding my reservation; when I mentioned it was a PL rental, she said, "Oh!", and found it immediately, explaining that PL rentals, for reasons unknown to her, were always listed by first name.
Then, before handing me the contract, she said they had some specials. With some reluctance, I said, "Let's hear them…". I stopped her after the first one: an upgrade to a 2010 Mustang Convertible for $8/day.
Mine was a silver/gray. Sweet.
