First time flying AZ. I am booked in L class for a flight to/from FCO this weekend. Does AZ offer upgrade options at the gate if FC is relatively empty? Or do they in practice do opups when coach is oversold? Does the smile pretty, act important and ask to be moved to C trick once on the plane actually work as some have reported or do you need to be Italian to be part of that "in" club?
Basically is there any way at all for me to engineer an upgrade?
Hi there
No they do opup quite a lot
Last weekend I was on gva-fco-ath-fco-gva and got upgraded 3/4 times
Just put your status in there and check with gate agent/ lounge staff. in 2 cases I was already upgraded before check in started
Just keep asking before boarding that really helps with them

Sorry... one information..... what is the "status" necessary to having upgrade if aviable ?
Thanks

Last year I bought GVA-FCO-LHR-FCO-GVA tkt in L class to AZ agent, she put my FB number (elite plus) and I was upgrade the segment FCO-GVA because of oversold in Y the last flight of the day.
I was called by the gate agent and get the new seat number, however the C class doesn't block the middle seat, same situation as ES in KL.

On a related topic, I have two intra-European flights on AZ this summer. They were booked via AirOne's site because it was cheaper that way. However, when I call the AirOne calling center, they can't put my DL Frequent Flier number on the reservation. Does AZ own AirOne and isn't AZ still part of SkyTeam? If so, why can't I do this?
Will I be able to when I check-in at the airport?
Thanks!

Az owns ap but ap is still star alliance member so if your flight is az then you can put skyteam ff number. They can't do it in the reservation because az and ap systems are still different but u can at the check in desk provided your flight is az.and yes, az is still and will remain sky team partner :)

1) flight has to be overbook in y/class
2) you have to be frequent flyer, expecially elite platinum plus etc.
3) in case there are not frequent flyer you have to be eligible for upgrading which means you have to be polite and well dressed
those are the requirements :)

Great to know, thanks!!
Also, I'll be arriving into FCO on Alitalia (but booked via Delta) and then I'll be changing to a domestic FCO-CTA flight on Alitalia on a different itinerary. I guess I can just get my boarding pass (and add the frequent flier number) at the gate of the FCO-CTA flight or are there "information desks" on the airside part of security?

Great, thanks! And at these transfer desks, that is where I can show them my Delta Medallion Card and have them put my Delta FF# on the reservation and cross my fingers for an upgrade, right?

AirOne isn't and has never been a Star Alliance member. It used to be a partner of Lufthansa and used Lufthansa's miles and more as their frequent flyer programme as well as also having some partnerships with other (but not all) *A members.
For example it has never been possible for bmi diamond club members to earn miles on AirOne even if the flight was booked under a LH codeshare.
What is true though is most SkyTeam airlines are still treating AirOne as a separate airline to Alitalia and so won't give you miles. If you're expecting to be on AirOne a lot then it's worth signing up for MilleMiglia for a place to dump your miles.
