Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Meeting a friend at SYD airport

I have a question about the possibility of meeting a friend at the airport in SYD on my upcoming trip (sorry for cross-posting, I also raised this question in the UA forum but haven't received a response yet). Here's the situation:

I'll be arriving at SYD at 6.10 am on UA from LAX, and my friend will be arriving at 6.25 am on UA from SFO and will be continuing on the UA flight to MEL at 8.00 am.

I'll be staying in SYD overnight so eventually I'll have to clear immigration while it's my understanding that my friend will have to clear transit security at SYD. Is there any place where we could meet prior to immigration / transit security?

Only the corridor. There isn't anything in between gates and transfer security (except bathroom but I don't think you want to meet up in there!).

Not long to wait if flights are on time, but UA has poor on-time performance.

Not long to wait if flights are on time, but UA has poor on-time performance.You could wait at the arrivals DF shop (there is only 1; don't recollect any seats there, tho!) but your friend will then have to backtrack to the transit security check (no big deal).
