Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm a OW Sappire with AA and currently scheduled to fly between NRT and HKG on CX. The HKG-NRT flight is currently "Full" if you try to purchase it online. I purchased my ticket from AA as part of JFK-HKG trip, so it's booked under AA codeshare flight number in N Class, a deep discounted fare.
I also have not requested seats by calling CX. Should I call and make sure I get a window or aisle seat? My thought was that if I don't have a seat assigned, the liklyhood of getting upgraded will be better on a full flight. Then there's the risk of getting stuck in the middle. Check in early or late? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If I were you, I would secure my favour seat. My experieces are CX will upgrade you even you have advance seat assignment. Don't forget that there are CX DM, GO and CX staffs in front of your u/g list, not worth to gamble.

Your odds of op-up are slim on that route anyway given the heavy frequent flier traffic (CX DM, CX GO, OW EM etc. all have priority over you, and I reckon on any given loaded flight there might be between 10 and 25 people in those buckets), I would get an advance seat assignment asap to avoid the middle seat.

I can't speak to your chances of getting an upgrade having booked on a codeshare flight number, but I will say that having an advance seat assignment does not mean you will not get upgraded.
I always do ASR and this has not stopped me from being op-uped.
Whether ASR reduces your chances is a question that is probably impossible for any of us to answer.

Being booked on a codeshare reduces your chance of getting opped-up by alot. However ASR doesn't reduce your chance. I always choose my seat beforehand and have always gotten opped-up If I were you, I would either change the flight number to a CX one or call up CX for ASR.

Checking in late for an overbooked flight only increase your chance of getting involuntary bump and not able to board the plane.

On any CX flight there are so many non-elite pax that I think for a CX or OW elite who checks in before closing time to get bumped off a flight would be almost an impossible scenario for Y class.

It is rare for current economy situation, but if F and J are also full and with everyone else already checked-in, all they would do is to give you high standby priority. I don't think CX will go through all the trouble to bump and pissoff a checked-in pax for a OW elite with a deep discount codeshare AA ticket.

That's the fare difference between how much you paid and how much the F or C fare is.@:-)

does the price depend on booking class or the acutal fare paid. As mine is a Y class ticket, so I thought the difference would be smaller

Actual fare paid. @:-) The same booking class is used for multiple fares. You cannot get a bargain this way.:p

Unless you're at least Gold I would say forget about op-up, or your chance of op-up is as good as lottery. I'm not saying it'll never happen, but you have to be very lucky (lack of higher tier members, full Y and seats available at J, etc.)
I've tried to book on full flights for awhile now and have never been op-up in NYC-HKG-NYC flights (but have frequently been op-up on HKG-TPE-HKG flights)

good luck to you, but I believe code-sharing don't share that same priority, because cx wont get as much $$ as they sell their own seats i believe?
But why CX believe in op-up so much? or just frequent flyers like us who got cut back from travel budget hope to have the luck??

CX does not really believe in op-ups. It diminishes the values of the premium cabins. It just has a habit of overbooking their cabins. As a result, there are more op-ups than other Asian carriers.
In any event, CX has far fewer free upgrades than US carriers.

Op-up is really the last resort for any airline as they don't really like to op-up people for fear that they get so used to it that they don't pay the full fare of J. Also, they rather encourage more J buyers than op-up.
However, in the bad economy they are now getting as much Y fare as possible, and rather make the extra few thousand bucks and op-up people then just telling them "sorry, no more seats"
CX summer flights are virtually full due to their recent drop in prices, I would say Marco Polo members (even Silver) should see plenty of op-up then.

The http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/11220620-post9.html post sums it up on the CX FAQ. # 7.3 answers your question specifically for AA flight numbers.
I won't say that it will never happen, but you would have to wait for the CX computer to sweep over everyone else's status before they come to yours on a 'different' flight number.

What will be the op-up priority be if lets say the person (Silver) used miles to upgrade from Y to J. Then op-up from J to F. Is this possible? In a situation like this, does the op-up priority applies to the same ranking order shown from the FAQ thread? Or will a full paid J passenger without status will get the op-up over the miles upgrade from Y to J Silver passenger?

I don't know, but I have many Cathay passenger veterans and I've never heard someone that op-up from an upgraded ticket, nor a reward ticket (from J to F).

I've been op-upped on an award ticket (an AA award yet) from J to F HKG-LAX. I used to frequently get op-ups when I was a OW Emerald until CX changed their op-up order. As a consequence of that, and jacking up the fares, my travel on CX has unfortunately diminished.

As a Diamond I was quite often op-uped from award tickets (Y-J and J-F) and also from upgrades (pay Y, miles to J, op-up to F). I was also op-upped from an award J to F when I was Gold. I didn't notice any difference in op-up frequency between any types of ticket - it's simply the status that matters.

For that route, even green got Op-up from time to time.I had never been Op-upped before, but the first time I flew HKG-TPE a few weeks ago (on KA) I got 1.5 op-ups. Outbound was "true" op-up. On the return, I got a J seat with Y service. I believe they put the few J passengers in the F cabin and used the entire J cabin for Y passengers.

AA passengers often complain about CX or BA passengers being upgraded and CX seem to always choose their own members over any other airlines on board, it is not expensive to upgrade this flight if your cheap ticket allows upgrade. To be honest its not a long flight and the Intra Asia biz class on CX is nothing special to be honest.

* Which airline does not give preference to her own FFers?
* Many OW EMs receive op-ups on CX quite often.
* CX does not have SWUs or many other forms of upgrades to their own FFs. That may be why MPC members are higher in op-up priorities.
* I have never received any free upgrades from AA as a MPC DM.
