Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Would you rent a car in Ayers Rock?

I'm flying into and out of AYQ, and I'm going to be there for 2 days (5/17-5/19). I'm staying at Sails, and I know they have complimentary pickup... has anyone been recently, and would you recommend renting a car there? I'm coming in on United from SFO and connecting SYD-AYQ 3 hours later... flying C, but also not totally excited to drive after 20+ hours of travel....

Yes. I've been to AYQ twice and rented a car both times.

To me, it beats being beholden to tours and shuttle busses.

We rented a car. Was nice to have flexibility and convenience to go to/from Ayers Rock at our convenience, as well as getting to/from hotel/airport.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a car is the way to go... I'll load up on caffeine when I land.

If you have a car you can head out to Kings Canyon at your convenience, which is just as stunning as Uluru if not more so.

Definitely get a hire car - will make your life a lot easier for the 2 days.

We are visiting AYQ in early July and have cancellable tours booked as well as a rental car. I think I'm going to cancel off the Rock and the Olgas tours based on this thread.

However we have a tour waitlisted to Cave Hill. It's an all-day tour to see a cave or rock art site in the Outback. If the waitlist doesn't clear (need 2 more people), we can take a tour to Mt. Connor instead. Has anyone taken either of these tours? It's with Ecotours, who have smaller vehicles and groups.

Just check the rental contract whether you get unlimited miles or 100 km/day. If the latter, be aware of the price.
