Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - companion upgrade... tried this?
I could use some genius help for this one.
Mvpg, +72 hours, lots of u space.
Can I upgrade 1, as a companion, on a separate pnr (in group of 3), traveling on tickets where miles were used to reduce the fare?
Yes…. When?
No… why not?
Thanks I couldn’t find it anywhere.

If they had a fully paid ticket, it would work fine. You just call the MVPG line and explain that they are your companion. But, since they used mileage, I don't think it will work. I assume it's an AS50 award and complimentary upgrades are not allowed with that award (or any other mileage awards):

as stated you should be able to upgrade one of them by getting the PNRs combined. If the other 2 are on a PNR together I aint exactly sure how that would work out  That part sounds like a mess.
If they are on an AS25 miles and MONEY award then "technically" they can not be upgraded
thanks for that link. they are on an AS50: Complimentary upgrades not allowed
i was wondering if that is technically her complimentary upgrade or would it be considered my gold benefit: Unlimited ability to upgrade one person into First Class if traveling with you*
* Subject to availability. Certain restrictions apply.
not sure what the restrictions are:confused:

not sure what the restrictions are:confused:thats one you may want to call the gold desk and ask. If you get an agent whose having a good day and is feeling really generous......

The PNR will have to be split. I don't know if an agent will want to do that. (Then, the agent might say "upgrades aren't allowed on the AS50"). I don't think the res system will allow different pax on the same itin in different fare classes. What an agent may be able to do at the gate is a different story.

As long as you are not on a companion cert you should be able to upgrade...
(Ie- the pnr can be split...)
However the AS25... That might be hard to convince- good luck!

Actually, those on companion certs can be upgraded when booked with an MVPG, no problem. I do it all the time with Seattlenerdette. (Unless you meant the other PNR with the non-MVPG may have used a companion cert and couldn't be broken apart because of that, since this thread is starting to confuse slightly.)
But the AS25/50 (now called Money and Miles) ... never an advance upgrade. Sometimes at the gate/airport, if the GA is feeling generous; I've had it happen recently. But they don't have to, due to the Money and Miles T&C.

I was a little limited on my response I guess...
I was trying to say that a companion cert can not be split, so as long as you were not trying to split a comp cert or upgrade an award ticket it would work-
I have upgraded several companion certs before...

Makes sense, on all fronts.

i appreciate the knowledge and experience here.
- the trio (xyz) is not on a companion fare but are on miles and money.
- xyz can receive no complimentary upgrade (miles and money)
- i need to split pnr of xyz and add x to my pnr
- exercise my MVPG benefit; a companion upgrade
so do i understand you generally cannot do this in advance but it might be accomplished at ticket counter/gate? and only if the ga is in a good mood?
i will also take the advice and call elite line and roll the dice. it's funny that this scenario can have several lines of approach.

so just to be clear...
all the passengers (besides you) are on Miles and Money tickets.
This means no complimentary upgrades. Your MVPG upgrades (whether for you, companion, or paper guest) are considered complimentary... so they cannot be upgraded.
On a Miles and Money ticket, you can redeem miles for an upgrade, or if available, do a paid upgrade at the ticket counter.

I hate it when that happens. Thanks missydarlin for the clear up of the information
