My Wife and I want to do a 1 day trip with an overnight stay. We are going to celebrate Mothers Day and my birthday. We plan to go on a Wen and Thur so that we can fly non-rev without worrying as much about getting to and from our destination. We will be leaving from ATL. Can anyone give me some ideas about good daytrips to do. We are thinking mybe D.C or NYC but we are wanting some input from frequent travelers. Thanks for your input in advance.

You say you are flying non-rev so it really will depend on the airline you will be flying. DC is always a good destination since it is a good walking city with plenty to see and do.

For me its a "Clam Chowder" run to BOS & a day on Bos harbor.
However trying to fly non-rev(at least on my airline) pretty much doesn't happen anymore.
And WELCOME tp Flyertalk.

I am flying on DL. We have been to Boston. Thanks for the suggestion but I should have included a list of where we have been. We want to go somewhere new to us. We have been to Bos, New Orleans, Biloxi, Daytona, Panama City and Orlando. What do you guys think of San Antonio or another Texas town as a day trip? So far DC is winning out but I would like somewhere a little romantic. Thanks for the great input so far.

SAT^^ nothing like a walk & boat ride on the riverwalk. And that's where I learned to like Mexican food:D

I am quite disappointed in the lack of response to my question. I join this forum because it looked pretty active. I was hoping that I could find some good ideas here. Thanks to those that have replied and if anyone else has any ideas let me know please.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect the lukewarm response is in part due to the very non-specific nature of your question -- since all you have provided is your timeframe and origin. It's really hard to answer such an open-ended question without knowing you, or having even the vaguest idea of the kind of things you like. The kind of threads that get the best response provide more specific detail ("I'm looking for a great spot to go scuba diving...."). Note that there's another thread in this forum asking for trip advice, and the poster provided more detail about what he's looking for ("strolling through pretty towns, swimming, hanging out in cafes"). Even though that thread started a couple days after yours, he's gotten far more responses.
So are you looking to get out into the sunshine and hike? I could suggest Sedona. See a show and go out for a memorable meal? New York. Spend the afternoon at a great museum? Washington.
For the best response, put those specifics in the title, so someone quickly scrolling through the forum can see at a glance exactly what you're looking for...and you'll be more likely to attract people who might have an answer....
Good luck.

Thanks that is a very good point. I wasn't specific enough in what I wanted to do. Thanks for your reply and you insight. I guess we are looking to spend a couple of days just hanging out. We are not real heavy into going to clubs or drinking. We want a nice trip that we can find a couple of interesting things to do and also want it to be somewhat romantic as well. That is why I was thinking of D.C. I figured we could do some interesting things during the day and maybe have a nice romantic dinner. We don't want to spend a ton of money. I heard the riverwalk at San Antonio was really cool too. I just want to have a nice calm trip where we can spend some quality time together. Thanks for your input.

How about New Orleans? Lots to see and do, and you won't need a car.

You really will NOT go wrong on the Riverwalk.

OP has been to New Orleans and wants somewhere new.
Chicago is always good.

Romantic? How about Savannah or Charleston? Boutique hotels and wonderful restaurants. For music, I would choose Austin or Nashville. Miami is still great even if you're not into clubbing. Heck, Key West is a short flight from ATL. What's more fun than that? Tampa for cuban food, a day at the beach, the Dali museum and maybe a ball game (does she like sports?)

Thanks for the ideas. I think we are still leaning toward doing DC but the Key West idea and Charleston sound pretty good too. SAT is still on my mind as well. Thank you all for you suggestions.

You want a little exotic? How about Montreal? A chance to listen to people speaking something other than English ... oh wait, SAT has that too. :D

We used to be DL employees and took one and two nights trip constantly. Some of our favorites:
Charleston. Stay in a carriage house. Eat dinner at the Wreck and walk around the city, visiting several historic churches, graveyards and houses. There's lots of goodies to eat and interesting sites.
Bar Harbour, Maine. This takes a little longer travel time but oh my goodness! We climbed a 500 foot mountain, explored an ocean cave, went whale watching on a boat, drove to the top of a huge mountain where there is a restaurant serving popovers and tea.
Williamsburg Va. This is a wonderful fast trip. Fly into Richmond or Virginia beach and drive about one hour. Wander the town and see the historic sites. The costumed historians relay the tales of life in the 18th century. Lots of great local homes that rent rooms for cheap.
St. Augustine, FL. Fast trip too. Fun exploring the oldest city in America. Pretty beach, lots of wilds..
Phoenix, Arizona. Fun fun! we stayed at a hotel with a huge lagoon, river pool, climbed a mountain, visited a wild west town, ate dinner past the tumbleweeds in the desert and had a ball. (got a speeding ticket too, but still....)
San Fran, CA. Yes, this can be done in a day trip too! You have to do a red eye..but oh my! Walking Fisherman's wharf, eating sourdough bread, riding a street car and going down the zig-zaggiest road ever...tons of fun! Just outside of town is a small redwood forest where you can walk and crane your neck back at the tall tall trees. Lots of pungent bay leave trees everywhere.
Ashville NC. Biltmore house. Ride horses on the grounds...stay in a B&B.
Mystic Seaport CT was really interesting. A side trip to Rhode Island and a tour of old homes is interesting too. We found an old house hidden in the woods that served 18th century style food cooked over the fireplace...really fun!
Boston, MA. Did you drive the cape? That's fun and interesting. Martha's Vineyard too.
And closer to home....have you been to Seaside or Watercolor in Santa Rosa Beach FL? Forget the caribbean or bahamas...this place is amazing. Watercolor has free kayaks, fishing poles, riotous gardens, gorgeous beach, and you can bike anywhere you need to go.
