Im going to start a new thread so I can help people avoid airport fees by renting off airport if they can spare the time.. I had to cancel a trip to Phoenix because the rental car for a week there was more expensive than the plane fare like 430 for a week at some companies at the airport. So I am going to start a thread explaining transit options to get to a rental car facility off airport to avoid the airport charges.
PORTLAND OREGON -- Take Max Red Line to 99th and Gateway then take Blue Line 1 stop E to 102nd Ave. Walk one long block north Enterprise is on the left side 423 NE 102nd.
If you have more time take about an hour train ride to Beaverton call Enterprise on Canyon Rd. to pick you up after all they do and pay only the base rental rate since Washington county has no additional taxes..
Let me hear from you fellow travelers for other options off airports..

You might want to also find out how you can also help Lobby on behalf of the rental car companies as a consumer to get the fees lowered across the country.
You mentioned PHX...it's not the highest.
The rental car companies have been fighting for years, yet they grow higher. I've never heard about the consumers actively getting involved...as its mostly city and states that are charging/adding on the bulk of the fees.

I really like your initiative for seeking out off-airport site locations. The only downside is how much will you pay to get to that location? This was especially realized when the local buses would take me only so much. The walk involved walking 5 blocks or taking a cab that would cost me some mullah. All this is one way. Two way is even more of a hassle when you have luggage to lug. I think this is best when you travel light. And don't mind absorbing the local views and like adventure. Sorry for the rant. But i do have advice for you. What rental car company did you look for? Alamo and national sometimes have this odd tendency to reduce prices drastically for a weekend. Perhaps this is because people may be canceling. But I have noticed checking either sunday evening or saturday morning gets lower rates.

Austin, TX.
Several years ago, I had a rental timeframe that was 3 days, 4 hrs that would have been 4 weekend days that would have cost approx $100+ all in. (even using a free weekend day coupon). Having lived there in the 1980's, I still knew my way around. I did the following:
Took a city bus to DT Austin and picked up a $30 (Fri to Mon) Enterprise rental. Booked compact, got F. With the RT bus transit time plus grace period eating up the extra 4 hrs, I paid $33 or $34 all in for the 3 day rental. Austin has alot of taxes/fees at the airport so it was worth saving alot of $. (almost 70% :))
The above only works if one can arrive during the normal business hours (8AM-5PM or so).
Seattle, WA (Aug 08)
I rented from the HLE that was about 1 mile away from SEA. We took a cab from the airport to the location and the HLE rembursed us almost all the cab fare. I was able to use a great coupon & CDP and paid approx $20 all in instead of $120+ for a 2 day weekend rental.
