Other Credit Card Programs - Anyone pay IRS witholding taxes online?

Has anyone used https://www.officialpayments.com/ to pay IRS estimated taxes? They seem to charge 2.5%. This would be a great way to meet the 750 minimum spend of citi credit cards as it only works out to ~$20.

Anything I should be aware of before I jump into this? I know I will have to lower my withholding tax from my paycheck. Does the IRS care whether they get the money from credit card or by withholding? Do you have to fill a separate form telling them you are going to make estimated payments yourself?

You may make a 2009 ES tax payment at any time and you do not need to notify the IRS. If you normally get a refund at tax time, you may adjust your WH to balance out the ES payment.

The other thing you could do is make a 2008 payment to the IRS. If you don't owe them any money they will send you a refund check. That should take 4-6 weeks.

The best option to meet the $750 spend level, go to the USMint.gov, buy 3 boxes of $1 Presidential coins on the direct ship program (maximum of 2 boxes for any one president for free shipping) and you will spend the $750 at no cost to you. There's a very long post that discusses the program in Miles Buzz, skip to the last few pages for some current information. It is very easy to do and $750 shouldn't cause any issue at your bank.

I went and did it , they charged around $18 for the 750 spend. Seemed quite easy. Will probably be using it quite often from now! I am not a big fan of the mint coins since that thread is way too long. Plus dealing with all those coins seems like a huge nuisance.

That is fine as long as you consider the 2.5% a small fee to pay for the convenience.

Personally I still prefer to send them a check and get the image of the back of the check showing the SSN and the bank info, just for the peace of mind that the amount is definitely credited to my SSN and have a solid proof of such. Unless IRS provides some mean for me to verify the receipt of my payment, I will continue to use a paper check.

As for the coin - there is no need to wade thru the thread as the process is super simple. The link to The Mint is in the first page, after that you can bookmark it on your computer, right? The last few pages are all you need to scan thru to see if there are any new data points regarding the shipments. BTW, above $500 worth all orders are now shipped UPS with signature required.
