Hawaii-based Airlines - Hawaiian's check-in process at OGG -circa 1994

Has anyone told Hawaiian their electronic check-in machines at OGG are broken?
It occurred to me that since they have been inoperable for over a year now... perhaps they weren't aware of it?
You'd think they might have a hunch since there are sometimes close to seventy people in line, trying to check baggage and such, before a mainland flight.
But then again, that highly trained 8-10 person outfit only seems capable of checking in 2, maybe 3, people at a time.
So even if they have noticed the machines are down, if might be a bit much to expect that they have a plan to fix them.
Should I be surprised?
NO, sadly. Since the demise of Aloha, HA has slowly slipped down the trench in terms of customer service, especially at OGG. If I were Dunkerley, I'd fire the whole lot and start over.

A little off topic, but yesterday at HNL around 1 to 2:30 p.m., ALL the kiosks inside the security area of the Interisland Terminal were roped off inside a secured gate area for a mainland flight. Thus no one could use them to check in. I asked a gate agent about that, and she told me that it didn't make sense, but her supervisor told her that pax could stand in line at the other end of the terminal to check in since it would be too much trouble to move the ropes and pylons to make the kiosks accessible.

The entire OGG experience seems more 1974 or 1984 than 1994 and certainly than 2004. Most of the flight monitors are broken and now often have paper taped to them that says they are inoperable. At the United check-in counter, the monitors proudly display the wrong time (if I recall correctly, the time doesn't change . . .). But, the flights are at least listed and legible (albeit, sometimes incorrect). The check-in process for United and Delta is not dramatically different than Hawaiian and can take huge amounts of time (almost missed a transpac once because it took almost 1.5 hours to check-in on United (whew!).
But, you learn to live with it and plan around it. And, I seriously doubt anyone makes a decision on where to vacation based on the little things at the airport. In addition, I'd rather see the fares stay low than have OGG increase ticket fees to pay for airport upgrades.

Ahhh, we don't all go to Hawaii for vacation... some of us are already here, and I travel to Maui on biz at least once a month. Yes, I am the guy with blackberry and loafers on the Hertz bus. :)
Speaking of inefficiencies... Transferring from KOA at HNL for a OAK flight last week, the powers that be have decided to move the Gate 61 agricultural X-ray inspection from the boarding area to just before entering the jetway. This causes a very slow progression from the terminal to the plane and palpably increases the apprehension of passengers boarding the flight.
In addition, ticket-taking occurs after this inspection queue, increasing the number of folks turned back for not being in the correct boarding order (people needing extra time, passengers boarding children under 5, first class and Premier, followed by general boarding by rows.)
A gate lice free-for-all ensued.
And yes, the internet connection at LIH Premier Club is still down, due to budget restrictions. :td:

Well... you can skip the hop to HNL if you're ok with flying on a 738... AS is starting nonstop OAK-KOA & OAK-OGG winter 09...
Saves a couple hours of connection time- and hopefully by then AS has wifi on all its 800's :D
Thank you, beckoa! I am currently welding myself to UA for 1K status these next few days (KOA-MEL,) after much soul-searching. I will check out the new AS offerings when available, and keen for the old Aloha flights that used to do the same run, sans WI-FI.
Perhaps I was contributing to Aloha's demise, but I became such a frequent flyer with them that I used to get comp'd F upgrades if the seats were available.
Ah, the old days... :)

You've got a good point, slippahs, and I see that beckoa is pretty active in the AS forum as well. ;)
I do appreciate the timely suggestion about the new direct service, and have even purchased my first RT from KOA to OAK on what might be the inaugural flight based on his mana'o and kokua.
The journey sometimes is the reward!
