I've been traveling SJU-PTY-GUA with increasing regularity for the past several weeks, and this will continue through June.

I've decided to spend a few days in PTY on one of my returns to SJU, so I can see the canal and visit some friends.

Previously, when I entered it was on a class trip and when I was a minor with my family.

This would be my first time actually entering Panama solo as an adult.

My question is, I've been reading the entry requirements for US citizens, and one is $500 cash/travelers checks. I usually travel with only $100-200 cash and keep the rest in plastic, whether credit cards or debit cards.

Should I withdraw a larger amount before I fly? Or should my plastic be enough to satisfy Panamanian customs?

I wonder how new that requirement is? Last time I entered on a US passport there was no check of that. A return ticket was the only requirement.

I have gone there by land also using my Costa Rica passport and just get waived through.

I am in PTY at least twice per month for the last 3 years and never had any trouble at all. Pay your $5, get the stamp and go!

perfect... I guess it's likely one of those things thats enforced in theory but not in practice.

I too recently got back from PTY, they didn't ask to see cash. I just had to buy the $5 tourist card from the airline.

on a side note, $200 goes a long way in Panama. Have fun.
